Juz 21
Surah Luqman is named after a man the Quran does not describe as a prophet, only as someone to whom Allah gave wisdom. It does not tell his story. It records what he said to his son. In a handful of verses, he speaks about the greatest wrong, the weight of the smallest deed, how to carry oneself in public, and the tone of one's voice. The surah then closes with a list of five things that only Allah knows. This guide covers the advice, what the scholars say about it, and the surah's other themes.
What Is Surah Luqman?
Surah Luqman is the 31st surah of the Quran. It is a Makki surah with 34 verses. It begins with the letters Alif Lam Mim and describes the verses of the Quran as the verses of the wise Book, a guidance and mercy for those who do good.
The name comes from Luqman, the wise man whose advice is quoted in verses 12 to 19. Most scholars say that he was a wise and righteous man and not a prophet. The Quran says only that Allah gave him wisdom (hikmah).
Wisdom Begins With Gratitude
Verse 12 states: "And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom: 'Be grateful to Allah.' And whoever is grateful is grateful for the benefit of himself. And whoever denies, then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
The surah begins Luqman's account by naming gratitude as the content of his wisdom. Scholars have noted that it places gratitude ahead of any other quality in the first sentence on him, and that it points out that gratitude benefits the one who gives it.
The First Advice: Do Not Associate Partners With Allah
Luqman's first words to his son in the surah are: "O my son, do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, association is a great injustice."
The way he addresses his son is gentle, as "O my son" (ya bunayya) is a loving form. His first piece of guidance is the most important one, and he places it before any practical advice. The verse follows a pattern found elsewhere in the Quran, where the greatest wrong is shirk because it places something equal to Allah.

A Parenthesis on Parents
Verses 14 and 15 interrupt the advice to give the surah's own words about parents. It says that Allah has commanded people to be good to their parents, that the mother carried the child in weakness upon weakness, and that weaning takes two years. It tells the person to be grateful to Allah and to the parents.
It then repeats the same ruling found in Surah Al-Ankabut: if they strive to make you associate with Allah something you have no knowledge of, do not obey them, but keep company with them in this world with kindness. The surah then returns to Luqman's speech.
The Weight of the Smallest Deed
Verse 16 gives the second piece of advice: "O my son, indeed if it should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or within the heavens or within the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Aware."
The verse says that no action is lost, however small and however hidden. A deed done in secret, behind a rock, or in the farthest part of the earth is still known and still accounted for. Scholars have used it to teach both caution against secret wrongdoing and hope for small good deeds that no one saw.
Prayer, Good, and Patience
Verse 17 gives the next advice: "O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters requiring determination."
The advice moves from a person's own relationship with Allah (prayer), to the community (enjoining good and forbidding evil), and then to endurance. Scholars have noted that patience is added because a person who calls others to good will face hardship for it.
Manners in Public
Verses 18 and 19 give guidance on behavior. Luqman tells his son not to turn his cheek in contempt toward people, and not to walk through the earth arrogantly, since Allah does not like every self-deluded boaster. He tells him to be moderate in his pace and to lower his voice, since the harshest of voices is the voice of the donkey.
These verses are among the Quran's clearest statements about everyday manners. They say that how a person walks, how a person looks at others, and how loudly he speaks are part of his character and his faith.

Other Themes in the Surah
The surah includes arguments from creation: the heavens raised without visible pillars, mountains placed on the earth, and rain that grows every noble kind of plant. It says that if all the trees on earth were pens and the sea were ink, with seven seas added to it, the words of Allah would not be exhausted.
It also describes people who buy idle talk to lead others astray from the path of Allah without knowledge, and says that a ship moves through the sea by the favor of Allah. When the waves cover people like shadows, they call upon Allah sincerely, and when He brings them to land, some of them are moderate and others deny Our signs.
The Five Keys of the Unseen
The final verse, 34, states: "Indeed, Allah has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware."
A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari narrated by Ibn Umar calls these five matters the keys of the unseen that only Allah knows. Scholars have discussed how this applies in modern times, when forecasts and medical scans can tell people about some of these things. The usual answer is that the verse speaks of the full and certain knowledge that belongs only to Allah, while people may know some things within limits that He has permitted.

31:12 Wa laqad aatainaa Luqmaanal hikmata anishkur lillaah; wa many yashkur fa innamaa yashkuru linafsihee wa man kafara fa innal laaha Ghaniyyun Hameed
And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] – then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
31:14 Wa wassainal bi waalidaihi hamalat hu ummuhoo wahnan 'alaa wahninw wa fisaaluhoo fee 'aamaini anishkur lee wa liwaalidaika ilaiyal maseer
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
31:15 Wa in jaahadaaka 'alaaa an tushrika bee maa laisa laka bihee 'ilmun falaa tuti'humaa wa saahib humaa fid dunyaa ma'roofanw wattabi' sabeela man anaaba ilayy; summa ilaiya marji'ukum fa unabbi'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon
But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
31:16 Ya bunaiya innahaaa in taku misqaala habbatim min khardalin fatakun fee sakhratin aw fis samaawaati aw fil ardi yaati bihal laa; innal laaha lateefun Khabeer
[And Luqman said], "O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.
31:17 Yaa bunaiya aqimis-Salaata waamur bilma'roofi wanha 'anil munkari wasbir 'alaa maaa asaabaka inna zaalika min 'azmil umoor
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
31:18 Wa laa tusa'-'ir khaddaka linnaasi wa laa tamshi fil ardi maarahan innal laaha laa yuhibbu kulla mukhtaalin fakhoor
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
31:19 Waqsid fee mashyika waghdud min sawtik; inna ankaral aswaati lasawtul hameer
And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."
Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him].
31:21 Wa izaa qeela lahumut-tabi'oo maaa anzalal laahu qaaloo bal nattabi'u maa wajadnaa 'alaihi aabaaa'anaa; awalaw kaanash Shaitaanu yad'oohum ilaa 'azaabis sa'eer
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers." Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?
31:22 Wa many yuslim wajha hooo ilal laahi wa huwa muhsinun faqadistamsaka bil'ur watil wusqaa; wa ilal laahi 'aaqibatul umoor
And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good – then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to Allah will be the outcome of [all] matters.
31:23 Wa man kafara falaa yahzunka kufruh; ilainaa marji'uhum fanunabbi'uhum bimaa 'amiloo; innal laaha 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor
And whoever has disbelieved – let not his disbelief grieve you. To Us is their return, and We will inform them of what they did. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.
31:24 Numatti'uhum qaleelan summa nadtarruhum ilaa 'azaabin ghaleez
We grant them enjoyment for a little; then We will force them to a massive punishment.
31:25 Wa la'in sa altahum man khalaqas samaawaati wal arda la yaqoolunnal laah; qulil hamdu lillaah; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon
And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth?" they would surely say, "Allah." Say, "[All] praise is [due] to Allah "; but most of them do not know.
31:26 Lilaahi ma fis samaa waati wal ard; innal laaha Huwal Ghaniyyul Hameed
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Indeed, Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.
31:27 Wa law annamaa fil ardi min shajaratin aqlaamunw wal bahru yamudduhoo mim ba'dihee sab'atu abhurim maa nafidat Kalimaatul laah; innal laaha 'azeezun Hakeem
And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day when no father will avail his son, nor will a son avail his father at all. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.

Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
FAQ
Was Luqman a prophet?
Most scholars say he was a wise and righteous man and not a prophet. The Quran says that Allah gave him wisdom and does not call him a messenger or a prophet.
What was the first thing Luqman told his son?
He told him not to associate anything with Allah and called shirk a great injustice. The advice comes before everything else in his speech.
What does the weight of a mustard seed mean in verse 16?
It is an example of the smallest possible deed. The verse teaches that even a tiny action, hidden in a rock or anywhere in the heavens or earth, will be brought forth by Allah.
Why does the verse compare the loudest voice to a donkey?
Verse 19 says that the harshest of voices is the voice of the donkey, to show how unpleasant shouting is. Scholars take it as a rebuke to raising one's voice without need, and as encouragement toward a calm tone.
What are the five keys of the unseen in verse 34?
They are the knowledge of the Hour, the sending down of rain, what is in the wombs, what a person will earn tomorrow, and where a person will die. A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari lists them as the keys of the unseen that no one knows except Allah.
Does weather forecasting contradict verse 34?
Scholars generally say it does not. The verse refers to knowledge that is complete, certain, and independent, which belongs only to Allah. People may learn about some of these matters through means that Allah allows, but they cannot know them in the full way described.
Final Thoughts
Luqman's advice moves in order from the most important matter to the smallest detail: do not associate partners with Allah, know that nothing is lost, establish prayer, call to good with patience, and then mind how you walk and how loudly you speak. The surah treats these as part of one wisdom, beginning in gratitude. The five keys of the unseen at the end remind the reader that all of this is done without knowing what tomorrow brings. If you put Luqman's list of advice beside your own week, which of the items comes easiest and which is the one you most often forget?
