Surah 35
Juz
Juz 22
Surah Fatir opens with praise for the One who originated the heavens and the earth, and its first verse introduces a mercy that no one can block. The surah goes on to describe the angels sent as messengers, warn people against being deceived by the life of this world, compare the believer to the unbeliever through a set of pairs, and explain who truly fears Allah. It is also known as Surah Al-Mala'ikah, "The Angels." This guide covers the opening verses, the warning against deception, the four pairs of comparison, and the three groups who inherit the Book.
What Is Surah Fatir?
Surah Fatir is the 35th surah of the Quran. It is a Makki surah with 45 verses. The word fatir means the Originator, the One who brings something into being from nothing and without a previous model. The surah is also known as Al-Mala'ikah, since it mentions the angels in its first verse.
Mercy No One Can Withhold
Verse 2 states: "Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy, none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds, none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
This is one of the most quoted verses of the surah. It says that no one controls the door of mercy except Allah. Scholars have connected it to the practice of asking Him alone for provision, relief, and guidance, since no one else can open what He has closed or close what He has opened.
The first verse also describes the angels as messengers with wings, "two or three or four," and says that He adds to creation what He wills. Scholars take this as a point of wonder about creation that people cannot see.
Do Not Be Deceived
Verse 5 states: "O mankind, indeed the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and let not the Deceiver delude you concerning Allah."
The next verse tells people that Satan is an enemy to them, so they should take him as an enemy. Scholars explain that the "deceiver" (al-gharur) is Satan, and that one of his methods is to make a person feel safe from accountability by pointing to Allah's mercy as an excuse for sin.
The surah also reminds people of the favor of Allah upon them and asks whether there is any creator other than Allah who provides from the sky and earth. It tells the Prophet not to grieve over those who deny him, since other messengers were denied before him.

Good Words and Righteous Deeds
Verse 10 states that whoever desires honor, all honor belongs to Allah. To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it. Scholars have explained that good words reach Allah, and that the righteous deed is what lifts them, so that speech without action does not rise.
The same verse says that those who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and their plotting will perish.
Four Pairs of Contrast
Verses 19 to 22 give four comparisons. The blind and the seeing are not equal. The darkness and the light are not equal. The shade and the heat are not equal. The living and the dead are not equal.
The surah says that Allah makes whom He wills hear, and that the Prophet cannot make those in graves hear. It is the same message, using the picture of a person who is physically alive yet unable to respond to the truth. The surah adds that the Prophet is only a warner.
Verse 18 includes a principle that is often cited: "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another." Each person is accountable for what he carries. A person weighed down by sins can call someone else to carry them, but none will be carried.
Colors in Creation and Who Fears Allah
Verses 27 and 28 take the reader to the mountains, fruits, and animals. They mention water sent from the sky to bring forth fruits of different colors, mountains with streaks of white and red and jet black, and people and animals and livestock of different colors. The verse then states: "Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge."
Scholars have explained the verse as saying that knowledge of Allah's creation leads to fear and awe of Him. Ibn Kathir and others describe the "knowledgeable" as those who know Allah through His names and attributes, so that the more a person knows of Him, the more he fears Him.

Three Groups Who Inherit the Book
Verse 29 describes those who recite the Book of Allah, establish prayer, and spend from what Allah has given them, secretly and openly, hoping for a trade that will never perish. Verse 32 then says that Allah has caused those He chose among His servants to inherit the Book, and that they are of three kinds.
Some wrong themselves, some are moderate, and some are foremost in good deeds by Allah's permission. The verse adds: "That is the great favor."
Scholars have discussed who the three groups are. Many understand them as three levels within the Muslim community. The one who wrongs himself is the believer who falls short, the moderate does the obligatory and avoids the forbidden, and the foremost adds voluntary good. The key point most scholars note is that all three are described as inheritors of the Book, which is the reason the verse is a source of hope.
Allah Does Not Hasten Punishment
The closing verses mention that if Allah were to take people to account for what they have earned, He would not leave a single creature on the surface of the earth, but He delays them to an appointed term. When the term comes, then indeed Allah is ever Seeing of His servants.
Verse 41 says Allah holds the heavens and the earth so they do not cease, and if they were to cease, no one could hold them after Him. The verse points to the order of the world as a continued act of His care.

35:1 Alhamdu lillaahi faatiris samaawaati wal ardi jaa'ilil malaaa'ikati rusulan uleee ajnihatim masnaa wa sulaasa wa rubaa'; yazeedu fil khalqi maa yashaaa'; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
35:2 Maa yaftahil laahu linnaaasi mir rahmatin falaa mumsika lahaa wa maa yumsik falaa mursila lahoo mimb'dih; wa Huwal 'Azeezul Hakeem
Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy – none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds – none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
35:3 Yaaa ayyuhan naasuzkuroo ni'matal laahi 'alaikum; hal min khaaliqin ghairul laahi yarzuqukum minas samaaa'i wal ard; laaa ilaaha illaa Huwa fa annaa tu'fakoon
O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you. Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
35:4 Wa iny yukazzibooka faqad kuzzibat Rusulum min qablik; wa ilal laahi turja'ul umoor
And if they deny you, [O Muhammad] – already were messengers denied before you. And to Allah are returned [all] matters.
35:5 Yaaa ayyuhan naasu inna wa'dal laahi haqqun falaa taghurrannakumul hayaatud dunyaa; wa laa yaghurran nakum billaahil gharoor
O mankind, indeed the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.
35:6 Innash shaitaana lakum 'aduwwun fattakhizoohu 'aduwwaa; innamaa yad'oo hizbahoo liyakoonoo min ashaabis sa'eer
Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.
35:7 Allazeena kafaroo lahum 'azaabun shadeed; wallazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati lahum maghfiratunw wa ajrun kabeer
Those who disbelieve will have a severe punishment, and those who believe and do righteous deeds will have forgiveness and great reward.
35:8 Afaman zuyyina lahoo sooo'u 'amalihee fara aahu hasanaa; fa innal laaha yudillu mai yashaaa'u wa yahdee mai yahaaa'u falaa tazhab nafsuka 'alaihim hasaraat; innal laaha 'aleemun bimaa yasna'oon
Then is one to whom the evil of his deed has been made attractive so he considers it good [like one rightly guided]? For indeed, Allah sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. So do not let yourself perish over them in regret. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of what they do.
35:9 Wallaahul lazeee arsalar riyaaha fatuseeru shaaban fasuqnaahu ilaa baladim maiyitin fa ahyaynaa bihil arda ba'da mawtihaa; kazaalikan nushoor
And it is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds, and We drive them to a dead land and give life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Thus is the resurrection.
35:10 Man kaana yureedul 'izzata falillaahil 'izzatu jamee'aa; ilaihi yas'adul kalimut taiyibu wal'amalus saalihu yarfa'uh; wallazeena yamkuroonas sayyiaati lahum 'azaabun shadeed; wa makru ulaaa'ika huwa yaboor
Whoever desires honor [through power] – then to Allah belongs all honor. To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it. But they who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and the plotting of those – it will perish.
35:11 Wallaahu khalaqakum min turaabin summa min nutfatin summa ja'alakum azwaajaa; wa maa tahmilu min unsaa wa laa tada'u illaa bi'ilmih; wa maa yu'ammaru mim mu'ammarinw wa laa yunqasu min 'umuriheee illaa fee kitaab; inna zaalika 'alal laahi yaseer
And Allah created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop; then He made you mates. And no female conceives nor does she give birth except with His knowledge. And no aged person is granted [additional] life nor is his lifespan lessened but that it is in a register. Indeed, that for Allah is easy.
And not alike are the two bodies of water. One is fresh and sweet, palatable for drinking, and one is salty and bitter. And from each you eat tender meat and extract ornaments which you wear, and you see the ships plowing through [them] that you might seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.
35:13 Yoolijul laila fin nahaari wa yoolijun nahaara fil laili wa sakhkharash shamsa wal qamara kulluny yajree li ajalim musammaa; zaalikumul lahuu Rabbukum lahul mulk; wallazeena tad'oona min doonihee maa yamlikoona min qitmeer
He causes the night to enter the day, and He causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon – each running [its course] for a specified term. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed.
35:14 in tad'oohum laa yasma'oo du'aaa'akum wa law sami'oo mas tajaaboo lakum; wa Yawmal Qiyaamati Yakfuroona bishirkikum; wa laa yunabbi'uka mislu khabeer
If you invoke them, they do not hear your supplication; and if they heard, they would not respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection they will deny your association. And none can inform you like [one] Acquainted [with all matters].
35:15 Yaaa ayyunhan naasu antumul fuqaraaa'u ilallaahi wallaahu Huwal Ghaniyyul Hameed
O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.
35:16 Iny yashaa yuzhibkum wa yaati bikhalqin jadeed
If He wills, He can do away with you and bring forth a new creation.
35:17 Wa maa zaalika 'alal laahi bi'azeez
And that is for Allah not difficult.
35:18 Wa laa taziru waaziratun wizra ukhraa; wa in tad'u musqalatun ilaa himlihaa laa yuhmal minhu shai'unw wa law kaana zaa qurbaa; innamaa tunzirul lazeena yakhshawna Rabbahum bilghaibi wa aqaamus Sallah; wa man tazakkaa fa innamaa yatazakkaa linafsih; wa ilal laahil maseer
And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And if a heavily laden soul calls [another] to [carry some of] its load, nothing of it will be carried, even if he should be a close relative. You can only warn those who fear their Lord unseen and have established prayer. And whoever purifies himself only purifies himself for [the benefit of] his soul. And to Allah is the [final] destination.
35:19 Wa maa tastawil a'maa wal baseer
Not equal are the blind and the seeing,
35:20 Wa laz zulumaatu wa lannoon
Nor are the darknesses and the light,
35:21 Wa laz zillu wa lal haroor
Nor are the shade and the heat,
35:22 Wa maa yastawil ahyaaa'u wa lal amwaat; innal laaha yusmi'u mai yashaaa'u wa maaa anta bimusi'im man fil quboor
And not equal are the living and the dead. Indeed, Allah causes to hear whom He wills, but you cannot make hear those in the graves.
35:23 In anta illaa nazeer
You are not but a warner.
35:24 Innaaa arsalnaaka bilhaqqi basheeranw wa nazeeraa; wa im min ummatin illaa khalaa feehaa nazeer
Indeed, We have sent you with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner.
35:25 Wa iny yukazzibooka faqad kazzabal lazeena min qablihim jaaa'athum rusuluhum bilbayyinaati wa bizzuburi wa bilkitaabil muneer
And if they deny you – then already those before them denied. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs and written ordinances and with the enlightening Scripture.
35:26 Summa akhaztul lazeena kafaroo fakayfa kaana nakeer
Then I seized the ones who disbelieved, and how [terrible] was My reproach.
35:27 Alam tara annal laaha anzala minas samaaa'i maaa'an fa akhrajnaa bihee samaraatim mukhtalifan alwaanuhaa; wa minal jibaali judadum beedunw wa humrum mukhtalifun alwaanuhaa wa gharaabeebu sood
Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby fruits of varying colors? And in the mountains are tracts, white and red of varying shades and [some] extremely black.
35:28 Wa minan naasi waddawaaabbi wal an'aami mukhtalifun alwaanuhoo kazaalik; innamaa yakhshal laaha min 'ibaadihil 'ulamaa; innal laaha 'azeezun ghafoor
And among people and moving creatures and grazing livestock are various colors similarly. Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.
35:29 Innal lazeena yatloona Kitaabal laahi wa aqaamus Salaata wa anfaqoo mimmaa razaqnaahum sirranw wa 'alaaniyatan yarjoona tijaaratal lan taboor
Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish –
35:30 Liyuwaffiyahum ujoorahum wa yazeedahum min fadlih; innahoo Ghafoorun Shakoor
That He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative.
35:31 Wallazeee awhainaaa ilaika minal Kitaabi huwal haqqu musaddiqal limaa baina yadiyh; innal laaha bi'ibaadihee la Khabeerum Baseer
And that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], of the Book is the truth, confirming what was before it. Indeed, Allah, of His servants, is Acquainted and Seeing.
35:32 Summa awrasnal Kitaabal lazeenas tafainaa min 'ibaadinaa faminhum zaalimul linafsihi wa minhum muqtasid; wa minhum saabiqun bilkhairaati bi iznil laah; zaalika huwal fadlul kabeer
Then we caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah. That [inheritance] is what is the great bounty.
35:33 Jannaatu 'Adnin yadkhuloonahaa yuhallawna feehaa min asaawira min zahabinw wa lu'lu'aa; wa libaasuhum feehaa hareer
[For them are] gardens of perpetual residence which they will enter. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their garments therein will be silk.
And they will say, “Praise to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative –
35:35 Allazeee ahallanaa daaral muqaamati min fadlihee laa yamassunaa feehaa nasabunw wa laa yamassunaa feehaa lughoob
He who has settled us in the home of duration out of His bounty. There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there touches us not in it weariness [of mind].”
35:36 Wallazeena kafaroo lahum naaru Jahannama laa yuqdaa 'alaihim fa yamootu wa laa yukhaffafu 'anhum min 'azaabihaa; kazaalika najzee kulla kafoor
And for those who disbelieve will be the fire of Hell. [Death] is not decreed for them so they may die, nor will its torment be lightened for them. Thus do We recompense every ungrateful one.
35:37 Wa hum yastarikhoona feehaa Rabbanaaa akhrijnaa na'mal saalihan ghairal lazee kunnaa na'mal; awalam nu'ammirkum maa yatazakkaru feehi man tazakkara wa jaaa'akumun nazeer; fazooqoo famaa lizzaalimeena min naseer
And they will cry out therein, “Our Lord, remove us; we will do righteousness, other than what we were doing!” But did We not grant you life enough for whoever would remember therein to remember, and the warner had come to you? So taste [the punishment], for there is not for the wrongdoers any helper.
35:38 Innal laaha 'aalimu ghaibis samaawaati wal ard; innahoo 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor
Indeed, Allah is Knower of the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and earth. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
35:39 Huwal lazee ja'alakum khalaaa'ifa fil ard; faman kafara fa'alaihi kufruh; wa laa yazeedul kaafireena kufruhum 'inda Rabbihim illaa maqtaa; wa laa yazeedul kaafireena kufruhum illaa khasaaraa
It is He who has made you successors upon the earth. And whoever disbelieves – upon him will be [the consequence of] his disbelief. And the disbelief of the disbelievers does not increase them in the sight of their Lord except in hatred, and the disbelief of the disbelievers does not increase them except in loss.
35:40 Qul ara'aytum shurakaaa'a kumul lazeena tad'oona min doonil laah; aroonee maazaa khalaqoo minal ardi am lahum shirkun fis samaawaati am aatainaahum Kitaaban fahum 'alaa baiyinatim minh; bal iny ya'iiduz zaalimoona ba 'duhum ba'dan illaa ghurooraa
Say, “Have you considered your ‘partners’ whom you invoke besides Allah? Show me what they have created from the earth, or have they partnership [with Him] in the heavens? Or have We given them a book so they are [standing] on evidence therefrom? [No], rather, the wrongdoers do not promise each other except delusion.”
35:41 Innal laaha yumsikus samaawaati wal arda an tazoolaaa; wa la'in zaalataaa in amsa kahumaa min ahadim mim ba'dih; innahoo kaana Haleeman Ghafooraa
Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them [in place] after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving.
35:42 Wa aqsamoo billaahi jahda aymaanihim la'in jaaa'ahum nazeerul layakoonunna ahdaa min ihdal umami falam maa jaaa'ahum nazeerum maa zaadahum illaa nufooraa
And they swore by Allah their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than [any] one of the [previous] nations. But when a warner came to them, it did not increase them except in aversion.
35:43 Istakbaaran fil ardi wa makras sayyi'; wa laa yaheequl makrus sayyi'u illaa bi ahlih; fahal yanzuroona illaa sunnatal awwaleen; falan tajida lisunnatil laahi tabdeelanw wa lan tajida lisunnatil laahi tahweela
[Due to] arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. Then do they await except the way of the former peoples? But you will never find in the way of Allah any change, and you will never find in the way of Allah any alteration.
35:44 Awalam yaseeroo fil ardi fa yanzuroo kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul lazeena min qblihim wa kaanoo ashadda minhum quwwah; wa maa kaanal laahu liyu'jizahoo min shai'in fis samaawaati wa laa fil ard; innahoo kaana 'Aleeman Qadeeraa
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? And they were greater than them in power. But Allah is not to be caused failure by anything in the heavens or on the earth. Indeed, He is ever Knowing and Competent.
35:45 Wa law yu'aakhizul laahun naasa bima kasaboo maa taraka 'alaa zahrihaa min daaabbatinw wa laakiny yu'akhkhiruhum ilaaa ajalim musamman fa izaa jaaa'a ajaluhum fa innal laaha kaana bi'ibaadihee Baseeraa
And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature. But He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, then indeed Allah has ever been, of His servants, Seeing.
FAQ
Why is the surah called Fatir?
Fatir means the Originator, the One who creates without a previous model. The surah starts by praising Allah as Fatir of the heavens and earth. It is also called Al-Mala'ikah because of its first verse about the angels.
What does verse 2 mean about mercy?
It means that no one can hold back a mercy that Allah gives, and no one can release what He holds back. Scholars use it to teach that provision and relief come from Him alone.
Who is the "Deceiver" in verse 5?
Scholars understand the deceiver (al-gharur) as Satan. One of the ways he deceives is by getting people to rely on Allah's mercy as a reason to delay repentance.
What does "only those who have knowledge fear Allah" mean?
Verse 28 says that those who truly fear Allah are the ones who know Him. Scholars say that this knowledge is not only information. It is knowledge that leads to awe and obedience.
Who are the three groups who inherit the Book?
Verse 32 names those who wrong themselves, those who are moderate, and those who are foremost in good deeds. Many scholars understand all three as groups within the believing community.
Does the surah say that people carry each other's sins?
No. Verse 18 says that no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Each person is responsible for his own deeds.
What is the meaning of the four pairs in verses 19 to 22?
The blind and seeing, the darkness and light, the shade and heat, and the living and dead are used as pictures of the difference between the unbeliever and the believer. The surah says that they are not equal.
Final Thoughts
Surah Fatir opens with mercy that no one can block and closes with a reminder that Allah does not hasten punishment. In between, it warns about the two sources of deception, the world and Satan, and it gives a clear picture of how a person grows in awe of Allah, through knowledge of His creation. The verse about the three groups who inherit the Book ends with the phrase "that is the great favor," and no group is left out. Looking at the three groups in verse 32, which one do you feel you belong to today, and what would the next step toward the one ahead of it look like?
