Surah 25
Juz
Juz 18 to 19
Surah Al-Furqan takes its name from its opening word, describing the Quran itself as al-Furqan, the Criterion, that which distinguishes right from wrong, truth from falsehood. The surah spends its early portion defending the Quran and the Prophet against specific objections raised by Makkan opponents, before closing with one of the Quran's most quoted passages: a detailed description of the qualities that define "the servants of the Most Merciful," presented almost as a practical summary of what righteous character actually looks like in daily conduct. This guide covers the surah's defense of revelation and its closing portrait of righteousness.
What Is Surah Al-Furqan?
Surah Al-Furqan is the 25th surah of the Quran, revealed in Makkah, making it a Makki surah. It contains 77 verses and takes its name from the word Al-Furqan in its opening verse, describing the Quran as having been sent down to the Prophet as a criterion by which humanity may distinguish truth from falsehood.
Defending the Quran and the Prophet
A significant portion of the surah addresses specific objections raised by Makkan opponents regarding the Prophet and the nature of revelation. These objections, recorded through the surah's direct responses, included questioning why the Prophet ate food and walked through markets like any ordinary person, rather than being accompanied by an angel or given treasure directly.
The surah responds by noting that earlier messengers also ate food and walked through markets, establishing this as a consistent pattern across all prophethood rather than a unique deficiency in Muhammad's case. It also addresses the objection that the Quran was not revealed all at once, explaining that it was sent down in stages specifically to strengthen the Prophet's heart gradually and to allow it to be recited to people at a measured pace suited to actual events and circumstances as they arose.

The Warning Through Destroyed Nations
The surah references the destruction of earlier communities who rejected their messengers, including the people of Nuh, the people of Aad and Thamud, and the people of Lut, presenting their fate as a warning example for the Makkans currently rejecting the Prophet's message, since the physical remains and locations of some of these destroyed communities remained visible and known to later generations.
The Description of Idols' Powerlessness
The surah includes a sharp critique of idol worship, describing a scene on the Day of Judgment where those who were worshipped alongside God will be gathered and asked whether they misled their worshippers or whether the worshippers strayed from the path themselves. The false deities will distance themselves entirely from those who worshipped them, declaring it was not befitting for them to be taken as protectors, and that the worshippers themselves were forgetful people who abandoned remembrance of God.
The Qualities of the Servants of the Most Merciful
The surah's closing section, verses 63 through 77, describes a series of specific qualities marking "the servants of the Most Merciful" (ibad ar-Rahman), presented as one of the Quran's most complete practical portraits of righteous character.
They walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them improperly, they respond with words of peace rather than engaging in conflict or matching hostility with hostility.
They spend portions of the night in prostration and standing in prayer before their Lord, reflecting a committed personal devotional life maintained privately rather than only in public ritual.
They pray specifically to be spared the punishment of Hell, describing it as a painful, inseparable torment, reflecting genuine concern for their ultimate outcome rather than complacency.
They are moderate in their spending, neither extravagant nor miserly, but maintaining a balance between the two extremes, a theme echoed in other surahs regarding financial conduct.
They do not invoke any deity alongside God, do not kill unlawfully except through due process of justice, and do not commit adultery, with the surah noting severe consequences for anyone who commits these specific violations, while also affirming that sincere repentance, belief, and righteous action can transform even serious wrongdoing into something God replaces with good deeds, reflecting His mercy toward genuine repentance.
They do not bear false witness, and when they pass by idle, worthless talk, they pass by it with dignity, declining to participate in or linger over purposeless speech or activity.
When reminded of the verses of their Lord, they do not fall upon them deaf and blind, but engage with genuine attention and reflection.
They pray for righteous spouses and offspring who will be a comfort to their eyes, and ask to be made leaders for the righteous, reflecting a concern that extends beyond personal conduct to the wellbeing and guidance of their families and future generations.
The passage concludes by stating these servants will be rewarded with the highest reaches of Paradise for their patience, received there with greeting and peace, abiding eternally in what is described as an excellent settlement and residence.

The Closing Rebuke
The surah's final verse delivers a direct statement addressed to those who reject the message: your Lord would not care for you except for your supplication (or, in another reading, were it not for your prayer to Him), but since you have denied, the denial will be a permanent consequence. Scholars have discussed both readings of this closing verse, with the common thread being an emphasis on prayer and turning to God as what gives human life its value and connection to its Creator.

25:1 Tabaarakal lazee nazzalal Furqaana 'alaa 'abdihee li yakoona lil'aalameena nazeera
Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner –

He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination.

But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection.
25:4 Wa qaalal lazeena kafarooo in haazaaa illaaa ifkunif taraahu wa a'aanahoo 'alaihi qawmun aakharoona faqad jaaa'oo zulmanw wa zooraa
And those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur'an] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie.

25:5 Wa qaalooo asaateerul awwaleenak tatabahaa fahiya tumlaa 'alaihi bukratanw wa aseelaa
And they say, "Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon."
25:6 Qul anzalhul lazee ya'lamus sirra fis samaawaati wal-ard; innahoo kaana Ghafoorar Raheemaa
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."
25:7 Wa qaaloo maa li haazar Rasooli yaakulut ta'aama wa yamshee fil aswaaq; law laaa unzila ilaihi malakun fa yakoona ma'ahoo nazeeraa
And they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?
25:8 Aw yulqaaa ilaihi kanzun aw takoonu lahoo jannatuny yaakulu minhaa; wa qaalaz zaalimoona in tattabi'oona illaa rajulam mas hooraa
Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."
25:9 Unzur kaifa daraboo lakal amsaala fadalloo falaa yastatee'oona sabeelaa
Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.
25:10 Tabaarakal lazeee in shaaa'a ja'ala laka khairam min zaalika jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru wa yaj'al laka qusooraa
Blessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that – gardens beneath which rivers flow – and could make for you palaces.
25:11 Bal kazzaboo bis Saa'ati wa a'tadnaa liman kazzaba bis Saa'ati sa'eeraa
But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.
25:12 Izaa ra'at hum mim ma kaanim ba'eedin sami'oo lahaa taghaiyuzanw wa zafeeraa
When the Hellfire sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.
25:13 Wa izaaa ulqoo minhaa makaanan daiyiqam muqar raneena da'aw hunaalika subooraa
And when they are thrown into a narrow place therein bound in chains, they will cry out thereupon for destruction.
25:14 Laa tad'ul yawma subooranw waahidanw wad'oo subooran kaseeraa
[They will be told], "Do not cry this Day for one destruction but cry for much destruction."
25:15 Qul azaalika khairun am Jannatul khuldil latee wu'idal muttaqoon; kaanat lahum jazaaa'anw wa maseeraa
Say, "Is that better or the Garden of Eternity which is promised to the righteous? It will be for them a reward and destination.
25:16 Lahum feehaa maa yashaaa'oona khaalideen; kaana 'alaa Rabbika wa'dam mas'oolaa
For them therein is whatever they wish, [while] abiding eternally. It is ever upon your Lord a promise [worthy to be] requested.
25:17 Wa Yawma yahshuruhum wa maa ya'budoona min doonil lahi fa yaqoolu 'a-antum adlaltum 'ibaadee haaa'ulaaa'i am hum dallus sabeel
And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and will say, "Did you mislead these, My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?"
25:18 Qaaloo Subhaanaka maa kaana yambaghee lanaaa an nattakhiza min doonika min awliyaaa'a wa laakim matta'tahum wa aabaaa'ahum hattaa nasuz zikra wa kaanoo qawmam booraa
They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined."
25:19 Faqad kazzabookum bimaa taqooloona famaa tastatee'oona sarfanw wa laa nasraa; wa mai yazlim minkum nuziqhu 'azaaban kabeeraa
So they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you – We will make him taste a great punishment.
And We did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others – will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.
25:21 Wa qaalal lazeena laa yarjoona liqaaa'anaa law laaa unzila 'alainal malaaa'ikatu awnaraa Rabbanaa; laqadistakbaroo feee anfusihim wa 'ataw 'utuwwan kabeeraa
And those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?" They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and [become] insolent with great insolence.
25:22 Yawma yarawnal malaaa 'ikata laa bushraa Yawma'izil lilmujrimeena wa yaqooloona hijram mahjooraa
The day they see the angels – no good tidings will there be that day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, "Prevented and inaccessible."
25:23 Wa qadimnaaa ilaa maa 'amiloo min 'amalin faja'alnaahu habaaa'am mansooraa
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed.
25:24 As haabul jannati yawma'izin khairum mustaqar ranw wa ahsanu maqeela
The companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] a better settlement and better resting place.
25:25 Wa Yawma tashaqqaqus samaaa'u bilghamaami wa nuzzilal malaaa'ikatu tanzeela
And [mention] the Day when the heaven will split open with [emerging] clouds, and the angels will be sent down in successive descent.
25:26 Almulku Yawma'izinil haqqu lir Rahmaan; wa kaana Yawman'alal kaafireena 'aseeraa
True sovereignty, that Day, is for the Most Merciful. And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day.
25:27 Wa Yawma ya'adduz zaalimu 'alaa yadaihi yaqoolu yaa laitanit takhaztu ma'ar Rasooli sabeelaa
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, "Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.
25:28 Yaa wailataa laitanee lam attakhiz fulaanan khaleelaa
Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend.
25:29 Laqad adallanee 'aniz zikri ba'da iz jaaa'anee; wa kaanash Shaitaanu lil insaani khazoolaa
He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter."
25:30 Wa qaalar Rasoolu yaa Rabbi inna qawmit takhazoo haazal Qur-aana mahjooraa
And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned."
25:31 Wa kazaalika ja'alnaa likulli Nabiyyin 'aduwwam minal mujrimeen; wa kafaa bi Rabbika haadiyanw wa naseeraa
And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper.
25:32 Wa qaalal lazeena kafaroo law laa nuzzila 'alaihil Quraanu jumlatanw waahidah; kazaalika linusabbita bihee fu'aadaka wa rattalnaahu tarteelaa
And those who disbelieve say, "Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?" Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.
25:33 Wa laa yaatoonaka bimasainn illaa ji'naaka bilhaqqi wa ahsana tafseeraa
And they do not come to you with an argument except that We bring you the truth and the best explanation.
25:34 Allazeena yuhsharoona 'alaa wujoohim ilaa jahannama ulaaa'ika sharrum makaananw wa adallu sabeelaa
The ones who are gathered on their faces to Hell – those are the worst in position and farthest astray in [their] way.
25:35 Wa laqad aatainaa Moosal Kitaaba wa ja'alnaa ma'ahooo akhaahu Haaroona wazeeraa
And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture and appointed with him his brother Aaron as an assistant.
25:36 Faqulnaz habaaa ilal qawmil lazeena kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa fadammarnaahum tadmeeraa
And We said, "Go both of you to the people who have denied Our signs." Then We destroyed them with [complete] destruction.
25:37 Wa qawma Noohil lammaa kazzabur Rusula aghraqnaahum wa ja'alnaahum linnaasi Aayatanw wa a'tadnaa lizzaalimeena 'azaaban aleemaa
And the people of Noah – when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.
25:38 Wa 'Aadanw Samooda wa As haabar Rassi wa quroonam baina zaalika kaseeraa
And [We destroyed] 'Aad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.
25:39 Wa kullandarabnaa lahul amsaala wa kullan tabbarnaa tatbeera
And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.
25:40 Wa laqad ataw 'alal qaryatil lateee umtirat mataras saw'; afalam yakoonoo yarawnahaa; bal kaanoo laa yarjoona nushooraa
And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.
25:41 Wa izaa ra awka iny yattakhizoonaka illaa huzuwan ahaazal lazee ba'asal laahu Rasoolaa
And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?
25:42 In kaada la yudillunaa 'an aalihatinaa law laaa an sabarnaa 'alaihaa; wa sawfa ya'lamoona heena yarawnal 'azaaba man adallu sabeela
He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.
25:43 Ara'aita manit takhaza ilaahahoo hawaahu afa anta takoonu 'alaihi wakeelaa
Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?
25:44 Am tahsabu annna aksarahum yasma'oona aw ya''qiloon; in hum illaa kal an'aami bal hum adallu sabeelan
Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.
25:45 Alam tara ilaa Rabbika kaifa maddaz zilla wa law shaaa'a laja'alahoo saakinan summa ja'alnash shamsa 'alaihe daleelaa
Have you not considered your Lord – how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.
25:46 Summa qabadnaahu ilainaa qabdany yaseeraa
Then We hold it in hand for a brief grasp.
25:47 Wa Huwal lazee ja'ala lakumul laila libaasanw wannawma subaatanw wa ja'alan nahaara nushooraa
And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection.
25:48 Wa Huwal lazeee arsalar riyaaha bushram baina yadai rahmatih; wa anzalnaa minas samaaa'i maaa'an tahooraa
And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure water
25:49 Linuhyiya bihee balda tam maitanw wa nusqiyahoo mimmaa khalaqnaaa an'aa manw wa anaasiyya kaseeraa
That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men.
25:50 Wa laqad sarrafnaahu bainahum li yazzakkaroo fa abaaa aksarun naasi illaa kufooraa
And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief.
25:51 Wa law shi'naa laba'asnaa fee kulli qar yatin nazeeraa
And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.
25:52 Falaa tuti'il kaafireena wa jaahidhum bihee jihaadan kabeeraa
So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur'an a great striving.
25:53 Wa Huwal lazee marajal bahraini haazaa 'azbun furaatunw wa haazaa milhun ujaaj; wa ja'ala bainahumaa barzakhanw wa hijram mahjooraa
And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.
25:54 Wa Huwal lazee khalaqa minal maaa'i basharran fa ja'alahoo nasaban wa sihraa; wa kaana Rabbuka Qadeeraa
And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].
But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].
25:56 Wa maa arsalnaaka illaa mubashshiranw wa nazeeraa
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
25:57 Qul maaa as'alukum 'alaihi min ajrin illaa man shaaa'a ai yattakhiza ilaa Rabbihee sabeelaa
Say, "I do not ask of you for it any payment – only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."
25:58 Wa tawakkal 'alal Haiyil lazee laa yamootu wa sabbih bihamdih; wa kafaa bihee bizunoobi 'ibaadihee khabeeraa
And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allah] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted –
25:59 Allazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda wa maa bainahumaa fee sittati aiyaamin summmmastawaa 'alal 'Arsh; ar Rahmaanu fas'al bihee khabeeraa
He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne – the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed.
25:60 Wa izaa qeela lahumus judoo lir Rahmaani qaaloo wa mar Rahmaanu anasjudu limaa taamurunaa wa zaadahum nufooraa
And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.
25:61 Tabaarakal lazee ja'ala fis samaaa'i buroojanw wa ja'ala feehaa siraajanw wa qamaram muneeraa
Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.
25:62 Wa huwal lazee ja'alal laila wannahaara khilfatal liman araada ai yazzakkara aw araadaa shookooraa
And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude.
25:63 Wa 'ibaadur Rahmaanil lazeena yamshoona 'alal ardi hawnanw wa izaa khaata bahumul jaahiloona qaaloo salaamaa
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,
25:64 Wallazeena yabeetoona li Rabbihim sujjadanw wa qiyaamaa
And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]
25:65 Wallazeena yaqooloona Rabbanas rif 'annnaa 'azaaba Jahannama inn 'azaabahaa kaana gharaamaa
And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;
25:66 Innahaa saaa'at mustaqarranw wa muqaamaa
Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."
25:67 Wallazeena izaaa anfaqoo lam yusrifoo wa lam yaqturoo wa kaana baina zaalika qawaamaa
And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate
25:68 Wallazeena laa yad'oona ma'al laahi ilaahan aakhara wa laa yaqtuloonan nafsal latee harramal laahu illaa bilhaqqi wa laa yaznoon; wa mai yaf'al zaalika yalqa asaamaa
And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
25:69 Yudaa'af lahul 'azaabu Yawmal Qiyaamati wa yakhlud feehee muhaanaa
Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated –

FAQ
What does "Al-Furqan" mean, and why is the Quran described this way?
Al-Furqan means "the Criterion", that which distinguishes between truth and falsehood, right and wrong. The surah's opening verse describes the Quran as having been revealed specifically to serve this function, providing humanity with a clear standard for making this distinction.
Why did Makkan opponents object to the Prophet eating food and walking through markets?
Some opponents argued that a true messenger should be set apart from ordinary human needs, perhaps accompanied by an angel or given miraculous wealth directly, rather than living an ordinary human life. The surah responds that earlier messengers also ate food and walked through markets, establishing this as consistent with the nature of prophethood generally rather than a flaw unique to Muhammad.
Why was the Quran revealed gradually rather than all at once?
The surah explains that gradual revelation served to strengthen the Prophet's heart over time and allowed the Quran to be recited to people at a measured pace connected to actual events and circumstances as they occurred, rather than being delivered as a single, disconnected text.
What are the qualities of the "servants of the Most Merciful" described in this surah?
Verses 63 through 77 describe qualities including humility in daily conduct, responding to hostility with peaceful words, devotion in private night prayer, moderate spending, avoiding major sins such as idolatry, unlawful killing, and adultery, avoiding false witness and idle talk, engaging attentively with reminders of God, and praying for righteous family and future generations.
Does the surah say repentance can erase the consequence of serious sins?
Yes. Following its warning about the severe consequences for idolatry, unlawful killing, and adultery, the surah states that whoever repents sincerely, believes, and does righteous deeds will have their past wrongdoing replaced with good deeds by God, reflecting His mercy toward genuine, complete repentance rather than leaving no path toward restoration.
What does it mean to respond to the ignorant with "words of peace"?
This quality, listed among those of the servants of the Most Merciful, describes a measured, non-confrontational response when addressed improperly or provoked by those acting from ignorance, choosing peaceful disengagement over matching hostility with further conflict.
What is the significance of the surah's final verse about prayer?
The closing verse states that God's care for people is connected to their supplication to Him, with denial resulting in a lasting consequence. Scholars discuss two related readings of this verse, both emphasizing that turning to God in prayer is what gives human life its essential value and connection to its Creator.
Final Thoughts
Surah Al-Furqan moves from a defense of revelation against specific objections into one of the Quran's most complete, practical descriptions of righteous character, not an abstract ideal but a checklist of observable conduct: how a person responds to insult, how they spend money, what they pray for regarding their own family, and how attentively they engage with reminders of God. Reading through the qualities of the "servants of the Most Merciful" one at a time, which single quality feels furthest from your own current habits, and which feels closest to something you already practice?
