Fifteenth chapter of the Quran
Juz
Entirely within Juz 14
Surah Al-Hijr, “The Rocky Tract,” is the fifteenth chapter of the Quran, a Makki surah of 99 verses contained entirely within Juz 14. It is named for the ancient valley of Al-Hijr, home of the people of Thamud who carved their houses into the mountains and were destroyed for rejecting their prophet Salih. But the surah is remembered for something greater than a ruined valley: it contains Allah’s solemn promise to guard the Quran itself. “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian” (15:9). No other scripture carries such a promise, and no other surah states it so plainly.
Al-Hijr was revealed in Makkah when the Prophet was being mocked and called a madman, and much of the surah is Allah’s direct consolation to him: the mockers’ words are known, their time is fixed, the angels will not descend on demand, and the message will outlive them all because Allah Himself is guarding it. The surah moves from the preservation of the Quran to the creation of Adam, the arrogance of Iblis, the destruction of past nations, the signs in the heavens and the earth, and closes with the tenderest command in the Quran to a grieving prophet: glorify your Lord, prostrate, and worship Him until certainty comes to you. This guide covers its themes, its key verses, and the full Arabic text.
As the last surah in this series, Al-Hijr completes the journey from Al-An’am‘s argument for God’s oneness to the promise that the argument itself will never be lost. Ten surahs, one message, and a divine guarantee at the end that it will reach every generation intact.

Themes and Key Topics of Surah Al-Hijr
Al-Hijr’s 99 verses gather around five themes: the preservation of the Quran, the mockery of the messengers, the creation of Adam and the fall of Iblis, the destroyed nations, and the consolation of the Prophet. The surah’s structure moves from the cosmic to the personal, ending with Allah speaking directly to His grieving messenger.
We Will Guard It (15:9)
Verse 9 is the surah’s crown and one of the most consequential verses in the Quran. Allah declares that He sent down the Dhikr, the Reminder, and that He Himself will guard it. Previous scriptures were entrusted to their followers and were altered; the Quran’s preservation is undertaken by Allah directly. The verse is the theological basis for the Quran’s textual integrity across fourteen centuries: memorized by millions, written in a single consonantal skeleton, transmitted by mass narration in every generation. When the surah was revealed, the Quran was a persecuted recitation in Makkah; the verse promised it would outlive its persecutors, and history has kept the promise.
The Mockers and Their Fixed Time
Verses 6 to 8 record the Quraysh’s taunts: “O you upon whom the Reminder was sent down, indeed you are mad,” and their demand to bring the angels if he is truthful. The surah answers with divine calm: the angels descend only with truth, and then there would be no respite; every nation had its appointed time that it could neither advance nor delay; and every messenger was mocked, without exception. The passage reframes mockery as the tax on prophethood, paid by every messenger, and therefore as confirmation rather than refutation. Verse 95 then gives the Prophet the surah’s assurance: “Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers.”
Adam, Iblis, and the Vow
Verses 26 to 44 retell the creation of Adam from sounding clay, the angels’ prostration, and Iblis’s refusal on the grounds that he was made of fire. Expelled and cursed until the Day of Judgment, Iblis asks for respite and vows to beautify falsehood for mankind and mislead them all, except Allah’s sincere servants. Allah’s response draws the battle lines for all of human history: His sincere servants are beyond Iblis’s reach, Hell has seven gates for the misled, and the righteous will enter gardens in peace. The passage is the surah’s map of the spiritual war, with the guarantee that sincerity is armor.
The Destroyed Nations
Verses 51 to 84 recount the angels’ visit to Ibrahim with news of a son, their mission to Lut’s people, and the destruction of the dwellers of Al-Hijr, the Thamud, who carved homes in the mountains and felt secure until the blast seized them in the morning. Verse 84 delivers the epitaph: “And availed them not that which they used to earn.” Their engineering, their wealth, their mountain fortresses, none of it helped. The surah holds up their carved houses, still visible on the Arabian trade routes, as a standing sermon: security is not in stone but in obedience.
The Closing Comfort (15:97-99)
The surah’s final verses are Allah speaking to the Prophet’s private pain: “We certainly know that your breast is constrained by what they say.” The prescription is worship: glorify the praises of your Lord, be among those who prostrate, and worship your Lord until certainty, death, comes to you. It is the Quran’s tenderest pastoral counsel: when words wound, answer with glorification; when the chest tightens, loosen it in prostration; and keep worshipping until the end, for the end is certain and near. The surah that began with mockers ends with the cure for mockery.

Virtues and Benefits of Surah Al-Hijr
Al-Hijr’s virtue is inseparable from verse 9. To recite the surah is to recite the promise that the words on your tongue are guarded by Allah Himself, unchanged since they descended. For the believer, this transforms every recitation into an act of trust: the Book is intact, the promise is intact, and the One who made the promise does not break promises. The surah is recited to strengthen certainty in the Quran, especially in times when its authority is questioned.
The surah is also the chapter of consolation for the mocked and the weary. Its closing verses were revealed for a Prophet whose chest was constrained by his people’s words, and they prescribe the same cure for every believer who carries the same constriction: glorification, prostration, and perseverance in worship until the end. Readers turn to Al-Hijr when words have wounded them, when efforts seem fruitless, and when they need to remember that Allah is sufficient against the mockers.
Finally, the surah contains one of the Quran’s great gifts to the Prophet and his followers: verse 87, “We have certainly given you seven of the often repeated verses and the great Quran,” understood as the seven verses of Al-Fatihah, the chapter recited in every prayer. The surah that promises to guard the Quran also names its greatest chapter, linking the whole Book to the words on every believer’s tongue, seventeen times a day.
Key Verses Explained
The verses of Al-Hijr that define its place in the Quran.
The Promise of Preservation (15:9)
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (15:9)
The most quoted verse of the surah and the foundation of Muslim certainty about the Quran’s text. The double emphasis, “it is We” who sent it down and “We” who will guard it, removes preservation from human hands and places it in divine ones. Fourteen centuries of identical transmission, in every land, in millions of memories, are the verse’s ongoing fulfillment.
The Seven Oft-Repeated (15:87)
“And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’an.” (15:87)
Allah’s gift to the Prophet named in the surah: the seven oft-repeated verses, understood by the companions to be Surah Al-Fatihah, recited in every unit of every prayer, alongside “the great Quran.” The verse pairs the greatest chapter with the whole Book, and it is why Al-Fatihah is called the Mother of the Book. Read our guide to Surah Al-Fatihah for its full study.
We Are Sufficient Against the Mockers (15:95)
“Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers” (15:95)
The surah’s shield verse, revealed when the mockery was at its worst. Allah does not tell the Prophet to answer the mockers, debate them, or silence them; He tells him that He is sufficient against them. The verse teaches the prophetic response to ridicule: leave the mockers to Allah and continue the mission. It is recited by everyone facing scorn for their faith.
The Constrained Breast and Its Cure (15:97-98)
“And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].” (15:97–98)
Allah names the Prophet’s pain before prescribing its cure: “We certainly know that your breast is constrained by what they say.” The divine acknowledgment comes first, then the remedy, glorify, prostrate. The verse teaches that Allah sees the wounds words inflict, and that worship is not an escape from pain but its treatment. It is among the most comforting verses in the Quran for the grieving.
Worship Until Certainty Comes (15:99)
“And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death).” (15:99)
The surah’s final verse and the last of its commands. “Certainty” is understood as death, the moment when all doubts end, so the verse commands worship without retirement, without pause, until the very end. It is the fitting close to a surah about preservation: the Book is guarded, and the believer’s duty is to keep worshipping it until certainty arrives.

[Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
36:36 Qaala Rabbi fa anzirneee ilaa Yawmi yub'asoon
He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
37:37 Qaala fa innaka minal munzareen
[Allah] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved
38:38 Ilaa Yawmil waqtil ma'loom
Until the Day of the time well-known."

63:63 Qaaloo bal ji'naaka bimaa kaanoo feehi yamtaroon
They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,

And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

And the people of the city came rejoicing.

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."

70:70 Qaalooo awalam nanhaka 'anil 'aalameen
They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
71:71 Qaala haaa'ulaaa'i banaateee in kuntum faa'ileen
[Lot] said, "These are my daughters – if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."
72:72 La'amruka innahum lafee sakratihim ya'mahoon
By your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.
73:73 Fa akhazat humus saihatu mushriqeen
So the shriek seized them at sunrise.
74:74 Faja'alnaa 'aaliyahaa saafilahaa wa amtamaa 'alaihim hijaaratam min sjijjeel
And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
75:75 Inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil lilmutawassimeen
Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.
76:76 Wa innahaa labi sabeelim muqeem
And indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road.
77:77 Inna fee zaalika la Aayatal lilmu'mineen
Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
78:78 Wa in kaana Ashaabul Aikati lazaalimeen
And the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers.
79:79 Fantaqamnaa minhum wa innahumaa labi imaamim mubeen
So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
80:80 Wa laqad kazzaba ashaabul Hijril mursaleen
And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.
81:81 Wa aatainaahum Aayaatinaa fakaanoo 'anhaa mu'rideen
And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.
82:82 Wa kaanoo yanhitoona minal jibaali buyootan aamineen
And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
83:83 Fa akhazat humus saihatu musbiheen
But the shriek seized them at early morning.
84:84 Famaaa aghnaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon
So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.
And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
86:86 Inna Rabbaka Huwal khallaaqul 'aleem
Indeed, your Lord – He is the Knowing Creator.
87:87 Wa laqad aatainaaka sab'am mnal masaanee wal Qur-aanal 'azeem
And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.
88:88 Laa tamuddanna 'ainaika ilaa maa matta 'naa biheee azwaajam minhum wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wakhfid janaahaka lilmu 'mineen
Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of the disbelievers, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers
89:89 Wa qul inneee anan nazeerul mubeen
And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" –
90:90 Kamaaa anzalnaa 'alal muqtasimeen
Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
91:91 Allazeena ja'alul Quraana'ideen
Who have made the Qur'an into portions.
92:92 Fawa Rabbika lanas'a lannahum ajma'een
So by your Lord, We will surely question them all
93:93 'Ammaa kaanoo ya'maloon
About what they used to do.
94:94 Fasda' bimaa tu'maru wa a'rid anil mushrikeen
Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
95:95 Innaa kafainaakal mustahzi'een
Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers
Who make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know.
And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.
98:98 Fasbbih bihamdi Rabbika wa kum minas saajideen

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death).
FAQ
What does Al-Hijr mean?
Al-Hijr means “The Rocky Tract.” It was the valley inhabited by the people of Thamud, who carved their homes into the mountains and rejected the prophet Salih. Their destruction is recounted in verses 80 to 84, and the surah takes its name from their land.
What does 15:9 mean by “We will guard it”?
The verse is Allah’s promise to preserve the Quran from alteration, loss, or corruption. Unlike previous scriptures, which were entrusted to their followers, the Quran’s preservation is undertaken by Allah Himself. Muslims see its fulfillment in the Quran’s identical transmission across fourteen centuries, memorized by millions in every generation.
Is Surah Al-Hijr Makki or Madani?
It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the migration, during the period when the Prophet was being mocked and persecuted. Its themes, the defense of revelation, the stories of past nations, and consolation for the Prophet, are characteristic of Makkan revelation. All 99 verses lie within Juz 14.
What are the “seven oft-repeated verses”?
Verse 87 mentions “seven of the often repeated verses” given to the Prophet along with the great Quran. The companions understood this as Surah Al-Fatihah, with its seven verses recited in every unit of prayer, which is why Al-Fatihah is called the Mother of the Book and the greatest chapter of the Quran.
What is the cure for a constrained heart in Surah Al-Hijr?
Verses 97 to 98 prescribe it: when the breast is constrained by people’s words, glorify the praises of your Lord and be among those who prostrate. The surah presents worship, dhikr and prostration, as the treatment for the pain that words inflict, and verse 99 adds perseverance: worship until certainty, death, comes.
Who were the people of Al-Hijr?
They were the Thamud, the people of the prophet Salih, who lived in the rocky valley of Al-Hijr on the northwestern Arabian trade route. They carved secure houses into the mountains but rejected their prophet and hamstrung the she-camel sent as a sign, so a mighty blast seized them. Their ruins remained visible to travelers as a warning.
Final Thoughts
Surah Al-Hijr closes this series of ten surahs with the promise that makes the whole Quran possible: the Reminder is guarded, and it will never be lost. From Al-An’am’s proof of God’s oneness to Al-Hijr’s guarantee of the Book’s preservation, these ten chapters have walked through argument, history, law, story, thunder, gratitude, and mercy. The surah’s last counsel is also this series’ last counsel: when words wound, glorify; when the chest tightens, prostrate; and worship your Lord until certainty comes to you. The Book is guarded. Your part is to read it, live it, and pass it on. Explore all 114 chapters on the Surah Guides hub, and begin again with Surah Al-Fatihah, the seven oft-repeated verses.
