Juz 17
Surah Al-Hajj opens with one of the Quran's most unsettling descriptions of the Day of Judgment, a day so severe that nursing mothers will forget their infants and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, while people appear drunk though they are not, overwhelmed instead by the severity of what they witness. From that stark opening, the surah moves through guidance connected to the pilgrimage (Hajj), permission for believers to defend themselves against persecution, and a sweeping argument about the nature of true worship. This guide covers the surah's major sections and what it establishes regarding Hajj and the believer's response to hardship.
What Is Surah Al-Hajj?
Surah Al-Hajj is the 22nd surah of the Quran. Scholars differ on its classification, with portions understood as Makki and others as Madani, reflecting its revelation across different periods of the Prophet's mission. It contains 78 verses and takes its name from its extended discussion of the Hajj pilgrimage, covering its rituals, history, and spiritual significance.
The Opening Warning About the Day of Judgment
The surah's opening verses describe the severity of the Hour in vivid, almost disorienting terms: nursing mothers forgetting their infants, every pregnant woman delivering prematurely, and people appearing intoxicated from the sheer intensity of what is witnessed, though no actual intoxication is involved.
This opening serves a clear rhetorical purpose, establishing the stakes before the surah moves into its subsequent content regarding resurrection, the stages of human creation as evidence for God's power to resurrect, and a warning against disputing about God without knowledge or guidance.
Evidence for Resurrection Through Human Creation
The surah presents human embryological development as direct evidence for the reality of resurrection, describing creation from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, a description scholars have connected to later scientific understanding of staged embryonic development, while cautioning against over-extending such connections beyond what the text explicitly states.
The argument follows a clear logic: the one who originates human life through these successive stages, and who similarly revives dead land through rain, causing it to grow every beautiful kind of vegetation, is equally capable of resurrecting the dead on the Day of Judgment, a conclusion the surah states directly follows from witnessing these processes already at work in the world.

History and Rituals of the Hajj
A significant portion of the surah addresses the Hajj pilgrimage directly. It describes God establishing the Sacred House (the Kaaba) for Ibrahim, instructing him not to associate partners with God, to purify the House for those who circle it, stand, bow, and prostrate in prayer there, and to proclaim the pilgrimage to humanity.
The surah describes people coming to the Hajj on foot and on every lean camel, arriving from every distant mountain highway, so they may witness benefits for themselves and mention God's name during specified days over the sacrifice of what He has provided from grazing livestock. It instructs eating from these sacrifices and feeding the poor and the needy, before completing the rites, fulfilling vows, and circling the ancient House.
The surah also addresses the sanctity of the Sacred House and the Sacred Mosque, warning against deviation and wrongdoing within this sacred space, and describes the severe consequence for those who attempt to bar people from it or treat its sanctity with disrespect.
Permission for Believers to Defend Themselves
Surah Al-Hajj contains what scholars identify as the first Quranic verse explicitly permitting armed defense against persecution. Verse 39 states that permission is given to those who are being fought against, because they have been wronged, and God is able to grant them victory.
This permission is immediately contextualized in verse 40, describing those who were expelled from their homes without right, simply for saying "our Lord is God", directly describing the situation of the early Muslim community persecuted in Makkah. The verse continues with a broader principle: were it not for God restraining some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which God's name is much mentioned, would have been destroyed, presenting the defense of religious freedom and sacred spaces broadly, not solely for the Muslim community, as the underlying justification.
The Argument Against False Worship
The surah includes extended argument against worshipping anything other than God, describing the powerlessness of false deities through a memorable image: even if they gathered together, they could not create a single fly, and if a fly took something from them, they could not recover it, a deliberate illustration meant to show the stark gap between claims of divine power and actual demonstrated ability, using one of the smallest and seemingly most insignificant creatures to make the point unavoidable.

Striving in the Way of God
The surah's closing verses include an instruction to bow, prostrate, worship one's Lord, and do good, so that one might succeed, alongside an instruction to strive for God with the striving due to Him, noting that He has chosen believers and placed no difficulty for them in religion, following what is described as the religion of their father Ibrahim, who named them Muslims before this and in the Quran, so that the Messenger may be a witness over them, and they may be witnesses over humanity.

22:1 Yaaa ayyuhan naasuttaqoo Rabbakum; inna zalzalatas Saa'ati shai'un 'azeem
O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing.

On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.
22:3 Wa minan naasi mai yujaadilu fil laahi bighairi 'ilminw wa yattabi'u kullaa shaitaanim mareed
And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.
22:4 Kutiba 'alaihi annahoo man tawallaahu fa annahoo yudil lauhoo wa yahdeehi ilaa 'azaabis sa'eer
It has been decreed for every devil that whoever turns to him – he will misguide him and will lead him to the punishment of the Blaze.

O People, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed – that We may show you. And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term, then We bring you out as a child, and then [We develop you] that you may reach your [time of] maturity. And among you is he who is taken in [early] death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit [old] age so that he knows, after [once having] knowledge, nothing. And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful kind.
22:6 Zaalika bi annal laaha Huwal haqqu wa annahoo yuhyil mawtaa wa annahoo 'alaakulli shai'in Qadeer
That is because Allah is the Truth and because He gives life to the dead and because He is over all things competent
22:7 Wa annas Saa'ata aatiya tul laa raiba feeha wa annal laaha yab'asuman fil quboor
And [that they may know] that the Hour is coming – no doubt about it – and that Allah will resurrect those in the graves.
22:8 Wa minan naasi mai yujaadilu fil laahi bighairi 'ilminw wa laa hudanw wa laa Kitaabim Muneer
And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening book [from Him],
22:9 Saaniya 'itfihee liyudilla 'an sabeelil laahi lahoo fiddun yaa khizyunw wa nuzeequhoo Yawmal Qiyaamati 'azaabal lhareeq
Twisting his neck [in arrogance] to mislead [people] from the way of Allah. For him in the world is disgrace, and We will make him taste on the Day of Resurrection the punishment of the Burning Fire [while it is said],
22:10 Zaalika bimaa qaddamat yadaaka wa annal laaha laisa bizallaamil lil'abeed
"That is for what your hands have put forth and because Allah is not ever unjust to [His] servants."
22:11 Wa minan naasi mai ya'budul laaha 'alaa harfin fa in asaabahoo khairunit maanna bihee wa in asaabat hu fitnatunin qalaba 'alaa wajhihee khasirad dunyaa wal aakhirah; zaalika huwal khusraanul mubeen
And of the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.
22:12 Yad'oo min doonil laahi maa laa yadurruhoo wa maa laa yanfa'uh' zaalika huwad dalaalul ba'ed
He invokes instead of Allah that which neither harms him nor benefits him. That is what is the extreme error.
22:13 Yad'oo laman darruhooo aqrabu min naf'ih; labi'salmawlaa wa labi'sal 'asheer
He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit – how wretched the protector and how wretched the associate.
22:14 Innal laaha yudkhilul laeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaar; innal laaha yaf'alu maa yureed
Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. Indeed, Allah does what He intends.
22:15 Man kaana yazunnu allai yansurahul laahu fid dunyaa wal aakhirati fal yamdud bisababin ilas samaaa'i summal yaqta' falyanzur hal yuzhibanna kaiduhoo maa yagheez
Whoever should think that Allah will not support [Prophet Muhammad] in this world and the Hereafter – let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off [his breath], and let him see: will his effort remove that which enrages [him]?
22:16 Wa kazaalika anzalnaahu aayaatim baiyinaatinw wa annal laaha yahdee mai yureed
And thus have We sent the Qur'an down as verses of clear evidence and because Allah guides whom He intends.
22:17 Innal lazeena aamanoo wallazeena haadoo was saabi'eena wan nasaaraa wal Majoosa wallazeena ashrakooo innal laaha yafsilu bainahum yawmal qiyaamah; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in shaheed
Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associated with Allah – Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, over all things, Witness.
22:18 Alam tara annal laaha yasjudu lahoo man fis samaawaati wa man fil ardi wash shamsu walqamaru wan nu joomu wal jibaalu wash shajaru wad dawaaabbu wa kaseerum minan naasi wa kaseerun haqqa 'alaihil 'azaab; wa mai yuhinil laahu famaa lahoo mim mukrim; innallaaha yaf'alu maa yashaaa
Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates – for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.
22:19 Haazaani khasmaanikh tasamoo fee Rabbihim fal lazeena kafaroo qutti'at lahum siyaabum min naar; yusabbu min fawqi ru'oosihimul hameem
These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water
22:20 Yusharu bihee maa fee butoonihim waljulood
By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.
22:21 Wa lahum maqaami'u min hadeed
And for [striking] them are maces of iron.
22:22 Kullamaa araadooo any yakhrujoo minhaa min ghammin u'eedoo feeha wa zooqoo 'azaabal hareeq
Every time they want to get out of Hellfire from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"
22:23 Innal laaha yudkhilul lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru yuhallawna feehaa min asaawira min zahabinw wa lu'lu'aa; wa libaasuhum feehaa hareer
Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk.
22:24 Wa hudooo ilat taiyibi minal qawli wa hudooo ilaaa siraatil hameed
And they had been guided [in worldly life] to good speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
22:25 Innal lazeena kafaroo wa yasuddoona 'an sabeelil laahi wal Masjidil Haraamil lazee ja'alnaahu linnaasi sawaaa'anil 'aakifu feehi walbaad; wa mai yurid feehi bi ilhaadim bizulmin nuziqhu min 'azaabin aleem
Indeed, those who have disbelieved and avert [people] from the way of Allah and [from] al-Masjid al-Haram, which We made for the people – equal are the resident therein and one from outside; and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing – We will make him taste of a painful punishment.
22:26 Wa iz bawwaanaa li Ibraaheema makaanal Baiti allaa tushrik bee shai'anw wa tahhir Baitiya litaaa'ifeena walqaaa' imeena warrukka 'is sujood
And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
22:27 Wa azzin fin naasi bil Hajji yaatooka rijaalanw wa 'alaa kulli daamiriny yaateena min kulli fajjin 'ameeq
And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass –
22:28 Li yashhadoo manaafi'a lahum wa yazkurus mal laahi feee ayyaamimma'loomaatin 'alaa maa razaqahum mim baheematil an'aami fakuloo minhaa wa at'imul baaa'isal faqeer
That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.
22:29 Summal yaqdoo tafasahum wal yoofoo nuzoorahum wal yattawwafoo bil Baitil 'Ateeq
Then let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and perform Tawaf around the ancient House."
22:30 Zaalika wa mai yu'azzim hurumaatil laahi fahuwa khairul lahoo 'inda Rabbih; wa uhillat lakumul an'aamu illaa maa yutlaa 'alaikum fajtanibur rijsa minal awsaani wajtaniboo qawlaz zoor
That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah – it is best for him in the sight of his Lord. And permitted to you are the grazing livestock, except what is recited to you. So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement,
22:31 Hunafaaa'a lillaahi ghaira mushrikeena bih; wa mai yushrik billaahi faka annamaa kharra minas samaaa'i fatakh tafuhut tairu aw tahwee bihir reehu bee makaanin saheeq
Inclining [only] to Allah, not associating [anything] with Him. And he who associates with Allah – it is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place.
22:32 Zaalika wa mai yu'azzim sha'aaa'iral laahi fa innahaa min taqwal quloob
That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.
22:33 Lakum feehaa manaafi'u ilaaa ajalim musamman summa mahilluhaaa ilal Baitil 'Ateeq
For you the animals marked for sacrifice are benefits for a specified term; then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House.
22:34 Wa likulli ummatin ja'alnaa mansakal liyazkurus mal laahi 'alaa maa razaqahum mim baheematil an'aam; failaahukum ilaahunw Waahidun falahooo aslimoo; wa bashshiril mukhbiteen
And for all religion We have appointed a rite [of sacrifice] that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And, [O Muhammad], give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]
22:35 Allazeena izaa zukiral laahu wajilat quloobuhum wassaabireena 'alaa maaa asaabahum walmuqeemis Salaati wa mimmaa razaqnaahum yunfiqoon
Who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and [to] the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.
22:36 Walbudna ja'alnaahaa lakum min sha'aaa'iril laahi lakum feehaa khairun fazkurusmal laahi 'alaihaa sawaaff; fa izaa wajabat junoobuhaa fakuloo minhaa wa at'imul qaani'a walmu'tarr; kazaalika sakhkharnaahaa lakum la'allakum tashkuroon
And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.
22:37 Lany yanaalal laaha luhoo muhaa wa laa dimaaa'uhaa wa laakiny yanaaluhut taqwaa minkum; kazaalika sakhkharhaa lakum litukabbirul laaha 'alaa ma hadaakum; wa bashshirul muhsineen
Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.
22:38 Innal laaha yudaafi' 'anil lazeena aamanoo; innal laaha laa yuhibbu kulla khawwaanin kafoor
Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.
22:40 Allazeena ukhrijoo min diyaarihim bighairi haqqin illaaa any yaqooloo rabbunallaah; wa law laa daf'ul laahin naasa ba'dahum biba'dil lahuddimat sawaami'u wa biya'unw wa salawaatunw wa masaajidu yuzkaru feehasmul laahi kaseeraa; wa layansurannal laahu mai yansuruh; innal laaha la qawiyyun 'Azeez
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right – only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
22:41 Allazeena im makkan naahum fil ardi aqaamus Salaata wa aatawuz Zakaata wa amaroo bilma'roofi wa nahaw 'anil munkar; wa lillaahi 'aaqibatul umoor
[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakah and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allah belongs the outcome of [all] matters.
22:42 Wa iny yukazzibooka faqad kazzabat qablahum qawmu Nooinw wa Aadunw wa Samood
And if they deny you, [O Muhammad] – so, before them, did the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud deny [their prophets],
22:43 Wa qawmu Ibraaheema wa qawmu Loot
And the people of Abraham and the people of Lot
22:44 Wa as haabu Madyana wa kuzziba Moosaa fa amlaitu lilkaafireena summa akhaztuhum fakaifa kaana nakeer
And the inhabitants of Madyan. And Moses was denied, so I prolonged enjoyment for the disbelievers; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My reproach.
22:45 Faka ayyim min qaryatin ahlaknaahaa wa hiya zaalimatun fahiya khaawiyatun 'alaa 'urooshihaa wa bi'rim mu'at talatinw wa qasrim masheed
And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong – so it is [now] fallen into ruin – and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.
22:46 Afalam yaseeroo fil ardi fatakoona lahum quloobuny ya'qiloona bihaaa aw aazaanuny yasm'oona bihaa fa innahaa laa ta'mal absaaru wa laakin ta'mal quloobul latee fissudoor
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
22:47 Wa yasta'juloonaka bil'azaabi wa lany yukhlifal laahu wa'dah; wa inna yawman 'inda Rabbika ka'alfi sanatim mimmaa ta'uddoon
And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.
22:48 Wa ka ayyim min qaryatin amlaitu lahaa wa hiya zaalimatun summa akhaztuhaa wa ilaiyal maseer
And for how many a city did I prolong enjoyment while it was committing wrong. Then I seized it, and to Me is the [final] destination.
22:49 Qul yaaa ayyuhan naasu innamaaa ana lakum nazeerum mubeen
Say, "O people, I am only to you a clear warner."
22:50 Fallazeena aamanoo wa 'amilu saalihaati lahum maghfiratunw wa rizqun kareem
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds – for them is forgiveness and noble provision.
22:51 Wallazeena sa'aw feee Aayaatinaa mu'aajizeena ulaaa ika As-haabul jaheem
But the ones who strove against Our verses, [seeking] to cause failure – those are the companions of Hellfire.
22:52 Wa maaa arsalnaa min qablika mir Rasoolinnw wa laa Nabiyyin illaaa izaaa tamannaaa alqash Shaitaanu feee umniy yatihee fa yansakhul laahu maa yulqish Shaitaanu summa yuhkimul laahu aayaatih; wallaahu 'Aleemun Hakeem
And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
22:53 Liyaj'ala maa yulqish Shaitaanu fitnatal lillazeena fee quloobihim maradunw walqaasiyati quloobuhum; wa innaz zaalimeena lafee shiqaaqim ba'eed
[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.

And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

But those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren Day.

That [is so]. And whoever responds [to injustice] with the equivalent of that with which he was harmed and then is tyrannized – Allah will surely aid him. Indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.

O people, an example is presented, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. And if the fly should steal away from them a [tiny] thing, they could not recover it from him. Weak are the pursuer and pursued.

And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakah and hold fast to Allah. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.
FAQ
Why does Surah Al-Hajj open with such intense imagery about the Day of Judgment?
The opening verses describe nursing mothers forgetting infants and people appearing intoxicated from the sheer severity of what they witness, establishing the weight of the Hour before the surah moves into its subsequent discussion of resurrection, Hajj, and guidance. Scholars note this intensity is intended to focus attention on the stakes of belief and conduct described in the rest of the surah.
What does Surah Al-Hajj say about the stages of human creation?
The surah describes creation progressing from dust, to a sperm-drop, to a clinging clot, to a lump of flesh partly formed and partly unformed, presented as direct evidence for God's power to resurrect the dead, following the same logic applied to the revival of dead land through rain.
What is the first Quranic verse permitting self-defense against persecution?
Scholars identify verse 39 of Surah Al-Hajj as this verse, stating that permission is given to those being fought against because they have been wronged. It is directly connected in verse 40 to the expulsion of early Muslims from their homes simply for declaring belief in God, and extends its reasoning to the protection of monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques generally.
What does the surah say about the history of the Kaaba?
The surah describes God establishing the Sacred House for Ibrahim, instructing him to avoid associating partners with God, to purify the House for worshippers, and to proclaim the pilgrimage to humanity, connecting the Hajj rituals directly to Ibrahim's foundational role in establishing the site.
What image does the surah use to argue against false worship?
The surah states that those worshipped besides God could not create even a single fly, even if they gathered together to attempt it, and if a fly took something from them, they could not recover it, an argument using one of the smallest creatures to demonstrate the complete powerlessness of false deities compared to God's actual demonstrated creative ability.
Does Surah Al-Hajj describe the purpose of Hajj rituals?
Yes. It describes people traveling from distant places to witness benefits for themselves, mention God's name over the sacrifice of livestock during specified days, eat from the sacrifice, feed the poor, complete the rites, fulfill vows, and circle the ancient House, framing Hajj as combining spiritual devotion with tangible benefit to the pilgrim and the needy.
What does the surah say about difficulty in religion?
Near its close, the surah states that God has chosen believers and placed no difficulty for them in religion, describing this as following the religion of Ibrahim, and notes that Muslims were named as such before the Quran and within it, so that the Messenger might be a witness over the Muslim community and the Muslim community a witness over humanity.
Final Thoughts
Surah Al-Hajj moves between some of the Quran's most intense warnings about the Day of Judgment and some of its most practical guidance on pilgrimage ritual, connected by a consistent thread: genuine worship requires recognizing who actually holds power to create, sustain, and resurrect, and responding to that recognition through both ritual devotion and ethical conduct, including the defense of sacred spaces and oppressed communities broadly. Reading its permission for self-defense alongside its description of Hajj's history and purpose, what connection do you see between protecting a community's ability to worship freely and the pilgrimage rites meant to express that worship?
