Surah As-Sajdah is a short Makki surah of 30 verses with a long history of regular recitation. The Prophet is reported to have recited it in the Fajr prayer on Fridays, and a report says he did not go to sleep until he had recited it together with Surah Al-Mulk. Its subject matter explains why: it covers the source of the Quran, the creation of the heavens and earth and of man, the certainty of meeting Allah, and a description of the believers who rise at night to call upon their Lord. This guide covers the surah’s themes, its verse of prostration, and the reports about its recitation.

What Is Surah As-Sajdah?

Surah As-Sajdah is the 32nd surah of the Quran. It is a Makki surah with 30 verses. It begins with the letters Alif Lam Mim and is also known by the name Alif Lam Mim Tanzil. The name “As-Sajdah,” meaning “The Prostration,” comes from verse 15, which describes the believers falling down in prostration when they are reminded of the verses of Allah.

The Source of the Quran

The opening verses state that the revelation of the Book, with no doubt in it, is from the Lord of the worlds. They then raise the objection of the unbelievers, who say that the Prophet has invented it, and answer that it is the truth from his Lord, so that he may warn a people to whom no warner had come before him.

Creation of the Heavens, Earth, and Man

Verses 4 to 9 describe the creation of the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, and then Allah settled above the Throne. The surah says that people have no protector or intercessor besides Him, and asks if they will not remember.

It then describes human creation: Allah began the creation of man from clay, then made his progeny from an extract of despised water, then proportioned him and breathed into him of His spirit, and made for people hearing, sight, and hearts. The surah ends the passage with the words: “Little are you grateful.”

Denial of the Resurrection and the Angel of Death

The unbelievers ask whether, when they are lost in the earth, they will really be in a new creation. The surah says that they are in fact deniers of the meeting with their Lord. Verse 11 answers them: “Say, ‘The angel of death will take you, who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord you will be returned.'”

It also pictures the guilty on the Day, with their heads hung low before their Lord, saying: “Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us to the world and we will do righteousness. Indeed we are now certain.” The surah answers that if Allah had willed, He would have given every soul its guidance, but His word has gone forth that Hell will be filled.

The Believers Who Prostrate

Verse 15 describes the true believers: “Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt Allah with praise, and they are not arrogant.”

The next verse says: “They arise from their beds; they call upon their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.” Verse 17 adds: “And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.”

A hadith qudsi in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, narrated by Abu Hurayrah, says Allah has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has imagined. The Prophet then said to recite the verse if you wish. Scholars cite this as the Prophet’s own explanation of the unseen reward in verse 17.

The Verse of Prostration

Verse 15 is a verse of prostration (sajdat at-tilawah). When a person recites it or hears it recited, he or she is encouraged to make one prostration. Most scholars consider this a sunnah action and not an obligation.

The surah’s name and its theme match the instruction. The same verse that describes the believers who fall in prostration when reminded is where the reader or listener falls in prostration as well.

Believers and the Defiantly Disobedient Are Not Equal

Verses 18 to 22 contrast the two groups. The surah asks whether someone who has been a believer is like someone who has been defiantly disobedient, and says they are not equal. The believers who do righteous deeds receive gardens as a lodging, and the defiantly disobedient are in the Fire, and are told that they will be returned to it each time they try to leave.

The surah also says that Allah will make them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment, so that perhaps they will return. It is the same idea expressed in Ar-Rum: hardship in this world can be a reminder.

Musa, Leaders, and the Day of Decision

Verses 23 to 25 mention that Allah gave Musa the Book, and made it guidance for the Children of Israel. Verse 24 states: “And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and were certain of Our signs.”

Scholars have noted that leadership in religion is tied here to two things: patience and certainty. The final verses speak of the Day of Decision, and tell the Prophet to turn away from the unbelievers and wait, for they too are waiting.

Reports About Reciting Surah As-Sajdah

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record that the Prophet used to recite Alif Lam Mim Tanzil As-Sajdah and Hal Ata Alal Insan (Surah Al-Insan) in the Fajr prayer on Friday. Many scholars say that this is a practice worth following, and some note that it does not mean the prayer must be long.

Jami at-Tirmidhi and other collections record that the Prophet did not go to sleep until he had recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil As-Sajdah and Tabarak, which is Al-Mulk. Scholars have graded this report differently, with some accepting it as reliable, so it is best treated as a recommended practice.

32:12 Wa law taraaa izil mujrimoona naakisoo ru'oosihim 'inda rabbihim rabbanaaa absarnaa wa sami'naa farji'naa na'mal saalihan innaa mooqinoon

If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain."

32:13 Wa law shi'naa la-aatainaa kulla nafsin hudaahaa wa laakin haqqal qawlu minnee la amla'anna jahannama minal jinnati wannaasi ajma'een

And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect [that] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together.

32:14 Fazooqoo bimaa naseetum liqaaa'a yawminkum haaza innaa naseenaakum wa zooqoo 'azaabal khuldi bimaa kuntum ta'maloon

So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do."

32:15 Innamaa yu'minu bi aayaatinal lazeena izaa zukkiroo bihaa kharroo sujjadanw wa sabbahoo bihamdi rabbihim wa hum laa yastakbiroon

Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.

32:16 Tatajaafaa junoobuhum 'anil madaaji'i yad'oona rabbahum khawfanw wa tama'anw wa mimmaa razaqnaahum yunfiqoon

They arise from [their] beds; they call upon their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.

32:17 Falaa ta'lamu nafsum maaa ukhfiya lahum min qurrati a'yunin jazaaa'am bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon

And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.

32:18 Afaman kaana mu'minan kaman kaana faasiqaa; laa yastawoon

Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.

32:19 Ammal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati falahum jannaatul ma'waa nuzulam bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon

As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.

32:20 Wa ammal lazeena fasaqoo fama'waahumun naaru kullamaa araadooo anyyakhrujoo minhaaa u'eedoo feehaa wa qeela lahum zooqoo 'azaaban naaril lazee kuntum bihee tukazziboon

But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."

And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

32:22 Wa man azlamu mimman zukkira bi-aayaati rabbihi Thumma a'rada 'anhaa; innaa minal mujrimeena muntaqimoon

And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.

32:23 Wa laqad aatainaa moosal kitaaba falaa takun fee miryatim mil liqaaa'ih; wa ja'alnaahu hudal libaneee israaa'eel

And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting. And We made the Torah guidance for the Children of Israel.

32:24 Wa ja'alnaa minhum a'immatany yahdoona bi amrinaa lammaa sabaroo wa kaanoo bi aayaatinaa yooqinoon

And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.

32:25 Inna rabbaka huwa yafsilu bainahum yawmal qiyaamati feemaa kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon

Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.

32:26 Awalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknaa min qablihim minal qurooni yamshoona fee masaakinihim inna fee zaalika la aayaat; afalaa yasma'oon

Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear?

32:27 Awalam yaraw annaa nasooqul maaa'a ilal ardil jaruzi fanukhriju bihee zar'an ta'kulu minhu an'aamuhum wa anfusuhum afalaa yubsiroon

Have they not seen that We drive the water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?

32:28 Wa yaqooloona mataa haazal fathu in kuntum saadiqeen

And they say, "When will this conquest be, if you should be truthful?"

32:29 Qul yawmal fathi laa yanfa'ul lazeena kafarooo eemaanuhum wa laa hum yunzaroon

Say, "On the Day of Conquest the belief of those who had disbelieved will not benefit them, nor will they be reprieved."

32:30 Fa a'rid 'anhum wantazir innahum muntaziroon

So turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.
