Allahumma bika asbahna, wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namut, wa ilaykan-nushur.
O Allah, by You we enter the morning, by You we enter the evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.

Rabbi a’udhu bika minal-kasali wa su’il-kibar, rabbi a’udhu bika min ‘adhabin fin-nari wa ‘adhabin fil-qabr.
We have reached the morning and all dominion belongs to Allah; all praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, without partner; to Him belongs dominion and to Him belongs praise, and He is over all things capable. My Lord, I ask You for the good of this day and the good of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what follows it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the troubles of old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.
Sahih Muslim 2723
Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they grasp nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255 • recited in the morning (An-Nasa’i, ‘Amal al-Yawm wal-Laylah)

Qul huwallahu ahad, Allahus-samad, lam yalid wa lam yulad, wa lam yakul-lahu kufuwan ahad.
Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, and there is none like Him. (Surah Al-Ikhlas)
Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each, morning and evening — Sunan Abi Dawud 5082
Along with Al-Ikhlas, recite Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Nas (114) three times each as well. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said these would suffice a person for everything when said in the morning and in the evening. Read them slowly and let their meaning of seeking Allah’s protection settle in your heart.
SubhanAllahi wa bihamdih.
Glory be to Allah and all praise is for Him. Say it one hundred times in the morning.
Sahih Muslim 2692 • no one will bring better deeds on the Day of Resurrection than one who says it, except one who says more
O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am faithful to Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You. (Sayyidul Istighfar, the master of seeking forgiveness)
Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 • whoever says it in the morning with certainty and dies that day enters Paradise
Meaning Explained
The first dua, Allahumma bika asbahna, is the morning’s opening contract with Allah. Four short clauses cover the whole of life: by You we enter the morning, by You we live, by You we die, and to You we return. Saying it in the morning means admitting that even reaching the morning was a gift, not a guarantee, and placing the entire day under Allah’s name.
The second dua, Asbahna wa asbahal-mulku lillah, moves from the personal to the cosmic. All sovereignty belongs to Allah, and the believer begins the day by asking Him for the day’s good and seeking refuge from its evil. Notice that it also asks protection from laziness, a reminder that a Muslim’s morning is meant to be active and purposeful, not wasted.
Ayatul Kursi is the greatest verse of the Quran, and its place in the morning adhkar is well established. It affirms Allah’s perfect power and knowledge before the day’s demands begin. The three Quls then wrap the believer in protection: Al-Ikhlas anchors the heart in pure monotheism, while Al-Falaq and An-Nas seek refuge from every visible and hidden harm. SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi cleanses the day before it starts, and Sayyidul Istighfar teaches the finest form of repentance. Together these remembrances balance praise, protection, and repentance, the three ingredients of a blessed day.
Virtues and Benefits
The virtues attached to these adhkar are extraordinary. Whoever says SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi one hundred times in the morning, no one on the Day of Resurrection will bring anything better except one who said the same or more (Sahih Muslim 2692). Whoever says Sayyidul Istighfar in the morning with firm belief and dies that day will be among the people of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306).
The three Quls recited three times morning and evening will suffice you for everything, a protection that covers seen and unseen harms alike (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082). Ayatul Kursi in the morning guards the believer, and the opening dua places every hour of the day under Allah’s name. Taken together, the morning adhkar are a shield that goes with you out the door.
Beyond reward, there is a practical effect that everyone who keeps this habit notices. Starting the day with dhikr settles the heart before the rush begins. Allah says in the Quran that hearts find rest in His remembrance (13:28), and the morning is the natural time to claim that rest. For more supplications tied to specific moments, see our dua upon waking up and dua for anxiety and sorrow.
When and How to Recite
The best time for the morning adhkar is after Fajr prayer until sunrise, though the scholars say they can be recited at any point in the morning. Sit quietly after prayer and read each dhikr slowly, understanding the words as you go. Meaning matters more than speed.
Start with Allahumma bika asbahna, then Asbahna wa asbahal-mulku lillah, Ayatul Kursi, the three Quls three times each, SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi one hundred times, and Sayyidul Istighfar. If you are short on time, even a few of them done consistently is better than all of them done once and abandoned.
FAQ
What is the best dua to recite in the morning?
The most famous opening dua is Allahumma bika asbahna: “O Allah, by You we enter the morning…” (Sunan Abi Dawud 5068, Tirmidhi 3391). It is the foundation of the morning adhkar, and from there the believer adds Ayatul Kursi, the three Quls, and SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi one hundred times.
How many times should I recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas in the morning?
Each of the three surahs is recited three times in the morning and three times in the evening, according to Sunan Abi Dawud 5082. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said this will suffice you for everything, meaning it covers protection against all harms.
When is the time for morning adhkar?
The ideal time is after Fajr prayer until sunrise, but the scholars allow the morning adhkar to be recited at any time in the morning. If you miss the early window, reciting them later in the morning is still rewarded. Consistency matters more than perfect timing.
What is the reward of saying SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi 100 times?
Sahih Muslim 2692 reports that whoever says it one hundred times in the morning (and in the evening), no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with better deeds than him, except one who said the same or more. Scholars also mention that sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.
Can I recite the morning adhkar after sunrise?
Yes. While the best window is after Fajr, there is no strict cutoff, and the reward is not lost if you recite them later in the morning. Do not abandon them just because sunrise has passed. Pair them with our evening adhkar to complete the daily cycle of remembrance.
Final Thoughts
Every morning is a small resurrection, a life given back to you after the little death of sleep. The morning adhkar are how a believer greets that gift: with gratitude for the night survived, protection for the day ahead, and words that weigh heavier than mountains on the scale. Make them your habit, and the day will carry you differently.
