Juz 23
Surah As-Saffat begins with an oath by angels standing in ranks and ends with a short prayer that many Muslims know by heart. In between, it describes the Day of Resurrection from both sides, the people of Paradise talking to one another and the people of the Fire arguing, and then it moves through a sequence of prophets: Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa and Harun, Ilyas, Lut, and Yunus. Its centerpiece is the story of Ibrahim and the dream in which he saw himself sacrificing his son, which is the origin of the sacrifice remembered each year at Eid al-Adha. This guide covers the structure of the surah and the lessons of each account.
What Is Surah As-Saffat?
Surah As-Saffat is the 37th surah of the Quran. It is a Makki surah with 182 verses. The name means "Those Ranged in Ranks" and comes from the first verse, which swears by the angels standing in rows.
The first verses swear by those ranged in ranks, those who drive away, and those who recite the reminder, and state: "Indeed, your God is One." Scholars generally understand these oaths as referring to the angels.
The Doubters and the Day of Meeting
The surah describes the unbelievers' reaction to the call. When they are told "there is no god except Allah," they are arrogant, and they say, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" It also records their astonishment at the idea of resurrection, when they ask whether they will be raised after they have become dust and bones.
The scene then moves to the Day of Gathering. The wrongdoers are brought with their partners, they are stood to be questioned, and they argue with one another. The followers blame those who led them, and the leaders say that it was the followers who were rebellious. The surah describes the tree of Zaqqum, which grows at the bottom of the Fire and is offered as food, as a test for the wrongdoers.
The People of Paradise and the Companion
In contrast, the believers in Paradise are described seated on couches, served by youths from a flowing spring. They turn to one another and ask questions. One of them says that he had a companion (qarin) in the world who used to say, "Are you among those who believe that when we have died and become dust and bones, we will be held to account?"
The speaker then looks down and sees his former companion in the middle of the Fire. He says: "By Allah, you almost destroyed me. If it had not been for the favor of my Lord, I would have been among those brought in." Scholars have explained the passage as a lesson about companionship, and about the importance of choosing friends who strengthen faith.

Nuh
The surah gives Nuh a short account. He called upon Allah and the best of responders answered him. He and his family were saved from the great distress, and his descendants were made the survivors. The surah ends the account with the line: "Peace upon Nuh among all the worlds." The same pattern, a prophet's account ending with a salutation of peace, is repeated for several of the prophets after him.
Ibrahim and the Sacrifice
Ibrahim's account is the longest. He came to his Lord with a sound heart, and asked his father and his people what they worshipped. He looked at the stars, said he was sick, and later came to the idols, offering them food. When they did not speak, he struck them down with his right hand. His people, in turn, planned to cast him into the fire, and the surah says that they planned a plot against him but Allah made them the lowest.
Ibrahim then says that he is going to his Lord, who will guide him. He asks for a righteous child, and the surah says that Allah gave him good news of a forbearing boy.
When the boy was old enough to work with him, Ibrahim said: "O my son, indeed I see in a dream that I am slaughtering you, so see what you think." The son answered: "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."
When both had submitted and Ibrahim laid him down on his forehead, Allah called to him: "O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision. Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial." Allah ransomed the son with a great sacrifice and left on Ibrahim a good mention among later generations.
Which Son Was It?
The Quran does not name the son in this passage. The good news of Ishaq is mentioned after the account, in verse 112. Many early authorities and most later commentators, including Ibn Kathir, take the son to be Ismail, while others hold that it was Ishaq. Scholars continue to cite reports on both sides.
The lesson of the passage does not depend on which son it was. The Quran presents it as a trial in which both father and son submitted to Allah, and in which Allah accepted their submission without requiring the sacrifice itself. The sacrifice of an animal at Eid al-Adha is understood by scholars as a commemoration of this event.

Musa, Harun, Ilyas, Lut, and Yunus
The remaining accounts are brief. Musa and Harun are given the clear Book and guided to the straight path, and are saved with their people from the great distress. Ilyas is described as one of the messengers, who asked his people whether they would call upon Ba'l and abandon the best of creators.
Yunus is described as one of the messengers who fled to a laden ship, drew lots, and was swallowed by the fish while blameworthy. The surah states that had he not been among those who glorify Allah, he would have remained in its belly until the Day they are resurrected. He was cast onto the open shore while sick, and Allah caused a gourd plant to grow over him. He was then sent to a hundred thousand or more, who believed, and were given provision for a time.
The Closing Verses
The surah returns to a claim made by some Arabs that the angels were Allah's daughters, and rejects it. The angels themselves say: "There is none among us but has a known position. And indeed, we are those who stand in rows, and indeed, we are those who exalt Allah."
The last three verses say: "Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of Honor, above what they describe. And peace upon the messengers. And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds."

37:64 Innahaa shajaratun takhruju feee aslil Jaheem
Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,
37:65 Tal'uhaa ka annahoo ru'oosush Shayaateen
Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.
37:66 Fa innahum la aakiloona minhaa famaali'oona minhal butoon
And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.
37:67 Summa inna lahum 'alaihaa lashawbam min hameem
Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.
37:68 Summa inna marji'ahum la ilal Jaheem
Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.
37:69 Innahum alfaw aabaaa'ahum daaalleen
Indeed they found their fathers astray.
37:70 Fahum 'alaa aasaarihim yuhra'oon
So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.
37:71 Wa laqad dalla qablahum aksarul awwaleen
And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,
37:72 Wa laqad arsalnaa feehim munzireen
And We had already sent among them warners.
37:73 Fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul munzareen
Then look how was the end of those who were warned –
37:74 Illaa 'ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen
But not the chosen servants of Allah.
37:75 Wa laqad naadaanaa Noohun falani'mal mujeeboon
And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.
37:76 Wa jajainaahu wa ahlahoo minal karbil 'azeem
And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.
37:77 Wa ja'alnaa zurriyyatahoo hummul baaqeen
And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]
37:78 Wa taraknaa 'alaihi fil aakhireen
And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
37:79 Salaamun 'alaa Noohin fil 'aalameen
"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."
37:80 Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
37:81 Innahoo min 'ibaadinal mu'mineen
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
37:82 Summa aghraqnal aakhareen
Then We drowned the disbelievers.
37:83 Wa ina min shee'atihee la Ibraaheem
And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,
37:84 Iz jaaa'a Rabbahoo bi qalbin saleem
When he came to his Lord with a sound heart
37:85 Iz qaala li abeehi wa qawmihee maazaa ta'budoon
[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?
37:86 A'ifkan aalihatan doonal laahi tureedoon
Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allah you desire?
37:87 Famaa zannukum bi Rabbil'aalameen
Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"
37:88 Fanazara nazratan finnujoom
And he cast a look at the stars
37:89 Faqaala inee saqeem
And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."
37:90 Fatawallaw 'anhu mudbireen
So they turned away from him, departing.
37:91 Faraagha ilaaa aalihatihim faqaala alaa taakuloon
Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?
37:92 Maa lakum laa tantiqoon
What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?"
37:93 Faraagha 'alaihim darbam bilyameen
And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.
37:94 Fa aqbalooo ilaihi yaziffoon
Then the people came toward him, hastening.
37:95 Qaala ata'budoona maa tanhitoon
He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,
37:96 Wallaahu khalaqakum wa maa ta'maloon
While Allah created you and that which you do?"
37:97 Qaalub noo lahoo bun yaanan fa alqoohu fil jaheem
They said, "Construct for him a furnace and throw him into the burning fire."
37:98 Fa araadoo bihee kaidan faja 'alnaahumul asfaleen
And they intended for him a plan, but We made them the most debased.
37:99 Wa qaala innee zaahibun ilaa Rabbee sa yahdeen
And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.
37:100 Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen
My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."
37:101 Fabashsharnaahu bighulaamin haleem
So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.
37:102 Falamma balagha ma'a hus sa'ya qaala yaa buniya inneee araa fil manaami anneee azbahuka fanzur maazaa taraa; qaala yaaa abatif 'al maa tu'maru satajidunee in shaaa'allaahu minas saabireen
And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."
37:103 Falammaaa aslamaa wa tallahoo liljabeen
And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,
37:104 Wa naadainaahu ai yaaaa Ibraheem
We called to him, "O Abraham,
37:105 Qad saddaqtar ru'yaa; innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen
You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
37:106 Inna haazaa lahuwal balaaa'ul mubeen
Indeed, this was the clear trial.
37:107 Wa fadainaahu bizibhin 'azeem
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,
37:108 Wa taraknaa 'alaihi fil aakhireen
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
37:109 Salaamun 'alaaa Ibraaheem
"Peace upon Abraham."
37:110 Kazaalika najzil muhsineen
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
37:111 Innahoo min 'ibaadinal mu'mineen
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
37:112 Wa bashsharnaahu bi Ishaaqa Nabiyayam minas saaliheen
And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.
37:113 Wa baaraknaa 'alaihi wa 'alaaa Ishaaq; wa min zurriyya tihimaa muhsinunw wa zaalimul linafshihee mubeen
And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself.
37:114 Wa laqad mananna alaa Moosaa wa Haaroon
And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.
37:115 Wa najjainaahumaa wa qawmahumaa minal karbil 'azeem
And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,
37:116 Wa nasarnaahum fakaanoo humul ghaalibeen
And We supported them so it was they who overcame.
37:117 Wa aatainaahumal Kitaabal mustabeen
And We gave them the explicit Scripture,
37:118 Wa hadainaahumus Siraatal Mustaqeem
And We guided them on the straight path.
37:119 Wa taraknaa 'alaihimaa fil aakhireen
And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:
37:120 Salaamun 'alaa Moosaa wa Haaroon
"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."
37:121 Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
37:122 Innahumaa min 'ibaadinal mu'mineen
Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.
37:123 Wa inna Ilyaasa laminal mursaleen
And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,
37:124 Iz qaala liqawmiheee alaa tattaqoon
When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah?
37:125 Atad'oona Ba'lanw wa tazaroona ahsanal khaaliqeen
Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators –
37:126 Allaaha Rabbakum wa Rabba aabaaa'ikumul awwaleen
Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"
37:127 Fakazzaboohu fa inna hum lamuhdaroon
And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],
37:128 Illaa 'ibaadallaahil mukhlaseen
Except the chosen servants of Allah.
37:129 Wa taraknaa 'alaihi fil aakhireen
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
37:130 Salaamun 'alaaa Il Yaaseen
"Peace upon Elias."
37:131 Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
37:132 Innahoo min 'ibaadinal mu'mineen
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
37:133 Wa inna Lootall laminal mursaleen
And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.
37:134 Iz najjainaahu wa ahlahooo ajma'een
[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,
37:135 Illaa 'ajoozan fil ghaabireen
Except an old woman [his wife] among those who remained [with evildoers].
37:136 Summa dammarnal aakhareen
Then We destroyed the others.
37:137 Wa innakum latamurroona 'alaihim musbiheen
And indeed, you pass by them in the morning
37:138 Wa billail; afalaa ta'qiloon
And at night. Then will you not use reason?
37:139 Wa inna Yoonusa laminal mursaleen
And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.
37:140 Iz abaqa ilal fulkil mashhoon
[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.
37:141 Fasaahama fakaana minal mudhadeen
And he drew lots and was among the losers.
37:142 Faltaqamahul hootu wa huwa muleem
Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.
37:143 Falaw laaa annahoo kaana minal musabbiheen
And had he not been of those who exalt Allah,
37:144 Lalabisa fee batniheee ilaa Yawmi yub'asoon
He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.
37:145 Fanabaznaahu bil 'araaa'i wa huwa saqeem
But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.
37:146 Wa ambatnaa 'alaihi shajaratam miny yaqteen
And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.
37:147 Wa arsalnaahu ilaa mi'ati alfin aw yazeedoon
And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.
37:148 Fa aamanoo famatta' naahum ilaa heen
And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.
37:149 Fastaftihim ali Rabbikal banaatu wa lahumul banoon
So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?
37:150 Am khalaqnal malaaa'i kata inaasanw wa hm shaahidoon
Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"
37:151 Alaaa innahum min ifkihim la yaqooloon
Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,
37:152 Waladal laahu wa innhum lakaaziboon
" Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.
37:153 Astafal banaati 'alal baneen
Has He chosen daughters over sons?
37:154 Maa lakum kaifa tahkumoon
What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?
37:155 Afalaa tazakkaroon
Then will you not be reminded?
37:156 Am lakum sultaanum mubeen
Or do you have a clear authority?
37:157 Faatoo bi Kitaabikum in kuntum saadiqeen
Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.
37:158 Wa ja'aloo bainahoo wa bainal jinnati nasabaa; wa laqad 'alimatil jinnatu innahum lamuhdaroon
And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment].
37:159 Subhaanal laahi 'ammaa yasifoon
Exalted is Allah above what they describe,
37:160 Illaa 'ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen
Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin].
37:161 Fa innakum wa maa ta'ubdoon
So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,
37:162 Maaa antum 'alaihi befaaatineen
You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him
37:163 Illaa man huwa saalil jaheem
Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.
37:164 Wa maa minnasa illaa lahoo maqaamum ma'loom
[The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.
37:165 Wa innaa llanah nus saaffoon
And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].
37:166 Wa innaa lanah nul musabbihoon
And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah."
37:167 Wa in kaanoo la yaqooloon
And indeed, the disbelievers used to say,
37:168 Law anna 'indana zikram minal awwaleen
"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,
37:169 Lakunna 'ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen
We would have been the chosen servants of Allah."
37:170 Fakafaroo bihee fasawfa ya'lamoon
But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know.
37:171 Wa laqad sabaqat Kalimatunaa li'ibaadinal mursa leen
And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,
37:172 Innaa hum lahumul mansooroon
[That] indeed, they would be those given victory
37:173 Wa inna jundana lahumul ghaaliboon
And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome.
37:174 Fatawalla 'anhum hatta heen
So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time.
37:175 Wa absirhum fasawfa yubsiroon
And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.
37:176 Afabi'azaabinaa yasta'jiloon
Then for Our punishment are they impatient?
37:177 Fa izaa nazala bisaahatihim fasaaa'a sabaahul munzareen
But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.
37:178 Wa tawalla 'anhum hattaa heen
And leave them for a time.
37:179 Wa absir fasawfa yubsiroon
And see, for they are going to see.
37:180 Subhaana Rabbika Rabbil 'izzati 'amma yasifoon
Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.
37:181 Wa salaamun 'alalmursaleen
And peace upon the messengers.
37:182 Walhamdu lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen
And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
FAQ
Why is the surah called As-Saffat?
It begins with an oath by those who stand in ranks, understood to be the angels. The name means "Those Ranged in Ranks."
Who was the son Ibrahim was commanded to sacrifice?
The Quran does not name him in the passage. Many scholars, including Ibn Kathir, say it was Ismail, and others say it was Ishaq. The lesson of the story does not depend on the name.
Was the sacrifice actually carried out?
No. The surah says that Allah called to Ibrahim and told him that he had fulfilled the vision, and then ransomed his son with a great sacrifice.
How is this story connected to Eid al-Adha?
Scholars connect the animal sacrifice of Eid al-Adha to Ibrahim's sacrifice, in which a ram was given in place of his son. The sacrifice is a commemoration of his obedience and his son's submission.
What is the tree of Zaqqum?
The surah describes it as a tree that comes out of the bottom of the Fire, whose fruit is like the heads of devils. It is offered as food to the wrongdoers and is called a trial for them.
What happened to Yunus in this surah?
Yunus left his people and boarded a ship, was cast overboard after drawing lots, and was swallowed by a great fish. The surah says that he glorified Allah and was cast out on the shore, and then he was sent to a very large number of people, who believed.
What is the meaning of the "companion" in verses 51 to 57?
The qarin is a close companion from the world who denied the Hereafter. One of the believers in Paradise sees him in the Fire and thanks Allah that he was not led along with him.
Final Thoughts
Surah As-Saffat keeps coming back to submission. The angels stand in ranks waiting for orders. Nuh calls and is answered. Ibrahim and his son submit to a command that is harder than any other in the Quran, and are told that this was the clear trial. Yunus learns the cost of leaving his post, and is saved by his glorification. The surah's closing prayer puts all of it into three short lines of praise and peace. Of the submissions the surah describes, which one do you find most difficult to imagine doing yourself, and what small act of submission could you practice this week?
