If Forgotten

Say Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu when you remember

Every meal a Muslim eats begins the same way: with the name of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that mentioning Allah’s name before eating protects the food from Shaytan and fills it with blessing. He also gave a remedy for the common case of forgetting, a short phrase that covers the meal retroactively. Below is the dua with full Arabic text, transliteration, English and Urdu meanings, and the Sunnah etiquette of eating.

Simple wholesome meal set on a table in warm light
In the name of Allah, at the beginning of every meal

The Dua in Arabic

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Bismillah.

In the name of Allah.

اللہ کے نام سے۔

Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 • say Allah’s name before eating

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ

Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirah.

In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end. (Say this if you forgot Bismillah at the start.)

اللہ کے نام سے، اس کے شروع میں اور اس کے آخر میں۔ (اگر شروع میں بسم اللہ کہنا بھول جائیں تو یہ کہیں۔)

Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 • Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1858, graded sahih (A’ishah)

Meaning Explained

Bismillah is the shortest complete dua in Islam and one of the most repeated. Saying it before eating does three things at once. It dedicates the meal to Allah, turning a physical need into an act of worship. It protects the food, because the Prophet said Shaytan finds it lawful to eat the food on which Allah’s name has not been mentioned (Sahih Muslim 2017). And it invites barakah, blessing, into what is eaten, so that even a little becomes enough.

The forgetting phrase, Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu, shows the mercy of the teaching. A’ishah reported that the Prophet said: “When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention it at the beginning, let him say: In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.” Scholars explain that this covers the meal retroactively, so the protection of Allah’s name applies to the whole sitting even when it was missed at the start.

The Prophet taught the young Umar ibn Abi Salamah three rules in one short hadith that every Muslim child still learns: mention Allah’s name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376). These three lines are the complete table manners of the Sunnah.

Virtues and Benefits

The virtues here are protection and blessing. Food begun with Bismillah is shielded from Shaytan’s share, and the one who remembers the remedy when forgetting loses nothing. The teaching also builds mindfulness: the pause to say Bismillah before the first bite slows the meal down, keeps gratitude present, and reminds the eater that provision comes from Allah, not from the hand alone.

For families, this dua is one of the first a child memorizes, and saying it aloud at the table passes the Sunnah to the next generation without a single lesson. After the meal, complete the cycle with our dua after eating, which turns gratitude into forgiveness of sins.

When and How to Recite

Say Bismillah aloud before the first bite of every meal and before drinking. If you remember midway that you forgot, say Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu immediately, without embarrassment. The same ruling applies to drinks. Eat with the right hand and from the side of the plate nearest to you, following the three rules of the hadith.

Other Sunnah etiquette around the meal includes washing the hands, not criticizing food, eating together rather than separately, and not blowing on hot food or drink. Each of these is reported in the authentic Sunnah and turns the dinner table into a place of worship.

FAQ

What do you say before eating in Islam?

+

Say Bismillah, “In the name of Allah,” before the first bite. This is the authentic dua before eating, taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to the young Umar ibn Abi Salamah along with eating with the right hand and eating from what is near (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376).

What if I forget to say Bismillah before eating?

+

Say Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu, “In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end,” as soon as you remember (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, graded sahih). This covers the meal retroactively, so the protection of Allah’s name applies to the whole sitting.

Is Bismillah before eating obligatory?

+

Scholars differ, but the majority consider it strongly recommended (mustahabb), with some holding it obligatory. Either way, it is a firmly established Sunnah that no Muslim should leave. Forgetting it is excused, and the remedy above repairs it.

Do I say Bismillah before drinking too?

+

Yes, the same ruling applies to drinks. Scholars note that the word used in the hadith covers anything with taste, food or drink. Say Bismillah before the first sip just as before the first bite.

What is the dua after eating?

+

After eating, say Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at’amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3458). Whoever says it has his past sins forgiven. See our full guide on the dua after eating.

Final Thoughts

Three words before the meal, and the food becomes worship. Bismillah is the smallest effort with one of the largest returns: protection from Shaytan, blessing in the provision, and a heart that remembers its Provider. Teach it to your children at the table tonight, and let every meal begin the way every good thing begins.
