Juz 17
Surah Al-Anbiya moves through the accounts of more than a dozen prophets in rapid succession, from Ibrahim's confrontation with idol worship to Ayyub's patience through illness, Yunus's time inside the fish, and Dawud and Sulaiman's wisdom in judgment, each account compressed into just a few verses rather than told at length. The effect is less a detailed narrative and more a sweeping demonstration: across vastly different times, places, and trials, every prophet carried the same essential message and faced some version of the same resistance. This guide covers the surah's structure and the prophets it references.
What Is Surah Al-Anbiya?
Surah Al-Anbiya is the 21st surah of the Quran, revealed in Makkah, making it a Makki surah. It contains 112 verses and takes its name from its extensive, though often brief, coverage of numerous prophets across Islamic tradition, the word Anbiya meaning "The Prophets."
The surah opens with a warning about the approaching reckoning that people remain heedless of, before moving into its extended sequence of prophetic accounts, each illustrating a particular dimension of what prophethood requires and what those who reject it tend to do.
Ibrahim and the Confrontation with Idolatry
One of the surah's more detailed accounts covers Ibrahim's direct confrontation with his people's idol worship. The surah describes Ibrahim questioning his father and his people about the statues they worshipped, pointing out they could neither benefit nor harm anyone.
In a notable episode, Ibrahim broke the idols in his people's temple except the largest one, then suggested, when confronted, that they ask the largest idol what happened, since, he noted, it should be capable of speaking if it was truly worthy of worship. His people recognized the trap in this reasoning yet reverted to their habitual defense: this is how they found their forefathers behaving.
In response to this challenge to their beliefs, Ibrahim's people had him thrown into a fire, but the surah records God's command to the fire directly: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim." Ibrahim emerged unharmed, and the surah notes this as a clear sign despite his people's continued plotting against him.

Dawud and Sulaiman's Wisdom
The surah briefly describes an episode of judgment given to Dawud and Sulaiman regarding a field that had been grazed upon by someone's sheep at night. Sulaiman's understanding of the matter is noted specifically, though the surah states both were given sound judgment and knowledge.
The account also mentions Dawud's ability to understand the speech of birds alongside Sulaiman, the mountains and birds glorifying God along with Dawud, and his skill in making coats of armor, taught to him as a favor from God to protect people in battle. Sulaiman is described as having the wind made subject to him, running by his command, and jinn who worked for him, diving for him and performing other tasks, all under God's watchful protection over them.
Ayyub's Patience Through Illness
The surah includes a brief but significant account of Ayyub (Job) calling upon his Lord, stating that adversity has touched him, and that God is the most merciful of the merciful. God's response is described simply: He removed what afflicted him and gave him back his family, and doubled their number, as a mercy from Himself and a reminder for worshippers.
Scholars have noted the brevity of this account stands in contrast to how extensively Ayyub's trial is discussed in broader Islamic tradition, with this surah focusing specifically on his direct appeal to God and the restoration that followed, presented as a model of patience rewarded rather than a detailed account of the suffering itself.
Yunus and the Fish
The surah references Yunus, described as the one who went off in anger, thinking God would not restrict him, before calling out in the darkness, understood as the darkness of night, the sea, and the belly of the fish combined, declaring there is no god but God, exalting Him, and acknowledging his own wrongdoing.
The surah states this call was answered, and Yunus was saved from distress, adding that this is how believers are saved generally, connecting Yunus's specific rescue to a wider principle about how God responds to sincere, humble appeal even after a person has made a serious error in judgment.

The Central Message About Prophethood
Running through the surah's accounts is a consistent theme stated explicitly in verse 25: no messenger was sent before the Prophet Muhammad without revealing to him that there is no god but God, so worship Him alone. The surah's rapid sequence through multiple prophets across different eras functions as evidence for this unity of message, regardless of time, place, or the specific trials each prophet faced, the core call remained consistent.
The surah also addresses the purpose of sending prophethood itself, stating in verse 107 that the Prophet Muhammad was sent as a mercy to all the worlds, a verse widely cited regarding the universal, rather than narrowly tribal or regional, nature of his message.

21:1 Iqtaraba linnaasi hisaa buhum wa hum fee ghaflatim mu'ridoon
[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away.
21:2 Maa yaateehim min zikrim mir Rabbihim muhdasin illas tama'oohu wa hum yal'aboon
No mention comes to them anew from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are at play
21:3 Laahiyatan quloobuhum; wa asarrun najwal lazeena zalamoo hal haazaa illaa basharum mislukum afataa toonas sihra wa antum tubsiroon
With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?"
21:4 Qaala Rabbee ya'lamul qawla fis samaaa'i wal ardi wa Huwas Samee'ul Aleem
The Prophet said, "My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing."
21:5 Bal qaalooo adghaasu ahlaamim balif taraahu bal huwa shaa'irun falyaatinaa bi Aayatin kamaa ursilal awwaloon
But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."
21:6 Maaa aaamanat qablahum min qaryatin ahlaknaahaa a-fahum yu'minoon
Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them, so will they believe?
21:7 Wa maaa arsalnaa qablaka illaa rijaalan nooheee ilaihim fas'aloo ahlaz zikri in kuntum laa ta'lamoon
And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know.
And We did not make the prophets forms not eating food, nor were they immortal [on earth].
21:9 summa sadaqnaa humul wa'da fa-anjainaahum wa man nashaaa'u wa ahlaknal musrifeen
Then We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors.
21:10 Laqad anzalnaaa ilaikum Kitaaban feehi zikrukum afalaa ta'qiloon
We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your mention. Then will you not reason?
21:11 Wa kam qasamnaa min qaryatin kannat zaalimatanw wa anshadnaa ba'dahaa qawman aakhareen
And how many a city which was unjust have We shattered and produced after it another people.
21:12 Falammaaa ahassoo baasanaaa izaaa hum minhaa yarkudoon
And when its inhabitants perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it.
21:13 Laa tarkudoo warji'ooo ilaa maaa utriftum feehe wa masaakinikum la'allakum tus'aloon
[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes – perhaps you will be questioned."
21:14 Qaaloo yaa wailanaaa innaa kunnaa zaalimeen
They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
21:15 Famaa zaalat tilka da'waahum hattaa ja'alnaahum haseedan khaamideen
And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest [mowed down], extinguished [like a fire].
21:16 Wa maa khalaqnas samaaa'a wal arda wa maa bainahumaa laa'ibeen
And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.
21:17 Law aradnaaa an nattakhiza lahwal lat takhaznaahu mil ladunnaaa in kunnaa faa'ileen
Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with Us – if [indeed] We were to do so.
21:18 Bal naqzifu bilhaqqi 'alal baatili fa yadmaghuhoo fa izaa huwa zaahiq; wa lakumul wailu mimmaa tasifoon
Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.
21:19 Wa lahoo man fis samaawaati wal ard; wa man 'indahoo laa yastakbiroona 'an 'ibaada tihee wa laa yastahsiroon
To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire.
21:20 Yusabbihoona laila wannahaara laa yafturoon
They exalt [Him] night and day [and] do not slacken.
21:21 Amit takhazooo aalihatam minal ardi hum yunshiroon
Or have men taken for themselves gods from the earth who resurrect [the dead]?
21:22 Law kaana feehimaaa aalihatun illal laahu lafasadataa; fa-Subhaanal laahi Rabbil 'Arshi 'ammaa yasifoon
Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allah, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.
21:23 Laa yus'alu 'ammaa yaf'alu wa hum yus'aloon
He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.
21:24 Amit takhazoo min doonihee aalihatan qul haatoo burhaanakum haaza zikru mam ma'iya wa zikru man qablee; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoonal haqqa fahum mu'ridoon
Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muhammad], "Produce your proof. This [Qur'an] is the message for those with me and the message of those before me." But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away.
21:25 Wa maaa arsalnaa min qablika mir Rasoolin illaa nooheee ilaihi annahoo laaa ilaaha illaaa Ana fa'budoon
And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, "There is no deity except Me, so worship Me."
21:26 Wa qaalut takhazar Rahmaanu waladan Subhaanah; bal 'ibaadum mkkramoon
And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, they are [but] honored servants.
They cannot precede Him in word, and they act by His command.
He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves. And they, from fear of Him, are apprehensive.
21:29 Wa mai yaqul minhum inneee ilaahum min doonihee fazaalika najzeehi Jahannam; kazaalika najziz zaalimeen
And whoever of them should say, "Indeed, I am a god besides Him"- that one We would recompense with Hell. Thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.
21:30 Awalam yaral lazeena kafarooo annas samaawaati wal arda kaanataa ratqan faftaqnaahumaa wa ja'alnaa minal maaa'i kulla shai'in haiyin afalaa yu'minoon
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
And We placed within the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with them, and We made therein [mountain] passes [as] roads that they might be guided.
21:32 Wa ja'alnas samaaa'a saqfam mahfoozanw wa hum 'an Aayaatihaa mu'ridoon
And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away.
21:33 Wa Huwal lazee khalaqal laila wannahaara washshamsa wal qamara kullun fee falakiny yashbahoon
And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.
21:34 Wa maa ja'alnaa libasharim min qablikal khuld; afaimmitta fahumul khaalidoon
And We did not grant to any man before you eternity [on earth]; so if you die – would they be eternal?
21:35 Kullu nafsin zaaa'iqatul mawt; wa nablookum bishsharri walkhairi fitnatanw wa ilainaa turja'oon
Every soul will taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.
21:36 Wa izaa ra aakal lazeena kafarooo iny-yattakhizoonaka illa huzuwaa; ahaazal lazee yazkuru aalihatakum wa hum bi zikrir Rahmaani hum kaafiroon
And when those who disbelieve see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one who insults your gods?" And they are, at the mention of the Most Merciful, disbelievers.
21:37 Khuliqal insaanu min 'ajal; sa ureekum Aayaatee falaa tasta'jiloon
Man was created of haste. I will show you My signs, so do not impatiently urge Me.
21:38 Wa yaqooloona mataa haazal wa'du in kuntum saadiqeen
And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"
If those who disbelieved but knew the time when they will not avert the Fire from their faces or from their backs and they will not be aided…
21:40 Bal taateehim baghtatan fatabhatuhum falaa yastatee'oona raddahaa wa laa hum yunzaroon
Rather, it will come to them unexpectedly and bewilder them, and they will not be able to repel it, nor will they be reprieved.
21:41 Wa laqadis tuhzi'a bi-Rusulim min qablika fahaaqa billazeena sakhiroo minhum maa kaanoo bihee yastahzi'oon
And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
21:42 Qul mai yakla 'ukum billaili wannahaari minar Rahmaan; bal hum 'an zikri Rabbihim mu'ridoon
Say, "Who can protect you at night or by day from the Most Merciful?" But they are, from the remembrance of their Lord, turning away.
21:43 Am lahum aalihatun tamna'ulum min dooninaa; laa yastatee'oona nasra anfusihim wa laa hum minnna yus-haboon
Or do they have gods to defend them other than Us? They are unable [even] to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us.
21:44 Bal matta'naa haaa'ulaaa'i wa aabaaa'ahum hattaa taala 'alaihimul 'umur; afalaa yarawna anna naatil arda nanqusuhaa min atraafihaa; afahumul ghaaliboon
But, [on the contrary], We have provided good things for these [disbelievers] and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Then do they not see that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? So it is they who will overcome?
21:45 Qul innamaaa unzirukum bilwahyi; wa laa yasma'us summud du'aaa'a izaa maa yunzaroon
Say, "I only warn you by revelation." But the deaf do not hear the call when they are warned.
And if [as much as] a whiff of the punishment of your Lord should touch them, they would surely say, "O woe to us! Indeed, we have been wrongdoers."
21:47 Wa nada'ul mawaazeenal qista li Yawmil Qiyaamati falaa tuzlamu nafsun shai'aa; wa in kaana misqaala habbatim min khardalin atainaa bihaa; wa kafaa binaa haasibeen
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.
21:48 Wa laqad aatainaa Moosa wa haaroonal Furqaana wa diyaa'anw wa zikral lilmuttaqeen
And We had already given Moses and Aaron the criterion and a light and a reminder for the righteous
21:49 Allazeena yakhshawna Rabbahum bilghaibi wa hum minas Saa'ati mushfiqoon
Who fear their Lord unseen, while they are of the Hour apprehensive.
21:50 Wa haazaa Zikrum Mubaarakun anzalnaah; afa antum lahoo munkiroon
And this [Qur'an] is a blessed message which We have sent down. Then are you with it unacquainted?
21:51 Wa laqad aatainaaa Ibraaheema rushdahoo min qablu wa kunnaa bihee 'aalimeen
And We had certainly given Abraham his sound judgement before, and We were of him well-Knowing
21:52 Iz qaala li abeehi wa qawmihee maa haazihit tamaaseelul lateee antum lahee 'aakifoon
When he said to his father and his people, "What are these statues to which you are devoted?"
21:53 Qaaloo wajadnaaa aabaaa'anaa lahaa 'aabideen
They said, "We found our fathers worshippers of them."
21:54 Qaala laqad kuntum antum wa aabaaa'ukum fee dalaalim mubeen
He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error."
21:55 Qaalooo aji’tanaa bil haqqi am anta minal laa’ibeen
They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?"
21:56 Qaala bar Rabbukum Rabbus samaawaati wal ardil lazee fatarahunna wa ana ‘alaa zaalikum minash shaahideen
He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.
21:57 Wa tallaahi la akeedanna asnaamakum ba’da an tuwalloo mudbireen
And [I swear] by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."
21:58 Faja’alahum juzaazan illaa kabeeral lahum la’allahum ilaihi yarji’oon
So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question].
21:59 Qaaloo man fa’ala haazaa bi aalihatinaaa innahoo laminaz zaalimeen
They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers."
21:60 Qaaloo sami’naa fatany yazkuruhum yuqaalu lahooo Ibraaheem
They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham."
21:61 Qaaloo faatoo bihee ‘alaaa a’yunin naasi la’allahum yash hadoon
They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify."
21:62 Qaalooo ‘a-anta fa’alta haazaa bi aalihatinaa yaaa Ibraaheem
They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?"
21:63 Qaala bal fa’alahoo kabeeruhum haazaa fas’aloohum in kaanoo yantiqoon
He said, "Rather, this – the largest of them – did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."
21:64 Faraja’ooo ilaaa anfusihim faqaalooo innakum antumuz zaalimoon
So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."
21:65 Summa nukisoo ‘alaa ru’oosihim laqad ‘alimta maa haaa’ulaaa’i yantiqoon
Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!"
21:66 Qaala afata’budoona min doonil laahi maa laa yanfa’ukum shai’anw wa laa yadurrukum
He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?
21:67 Uffil lakum wa limaa ta’budoona min doonil laah; afalaa ta’qiloon
Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?"
21:68 Qaaloo harriqooho wansurooo aalihatakum in kuntum faa’ileen
They said, "Burn him and support your gods – if you are to act."
21:69 Qulnaa yaa naaru koonee bardanw wa salaaman ‘alaaa Ibraaheem
Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."
21:70 Wa araadoo bihee kaidan faja’alnaahumul akhsareen
And they intended for him harm, but We made them the greatest losers.
21:71 Wa najjainaahu wa Lootan ilal ardil latee baaraknaa feehaa lil ‘aalameen
And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds.
21:72 Wa wahabnaa lahooo Ishaaq; wa Ya'qooba naafilah; wa kullan ja'alnaa saaliheen
And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous.
21:73 Wa ja'alnaahum a'immatany yahdoona bi amrinaa wa awhainaaa ilaihim fi'lal khairaati wa iqaamas Salaati wa eetaaa'az Zakaati wa kaanoo lanaa 'aabideen
And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.
21:74 Wa Lootan aatainaahu hukmanw wa 'ilmanw wa najjainaahu minal qaryatil latee kaanat ta'malul khabaaa'is; innahum kaanoo qawma saw'in faasiqeen
And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient.
21:75 Wa adkhalnaahu fee rahmatinaa innahoo minas saalihee
And We admitted him into Our mercy. Indeed, he was of the righteous.
21:76 Wa noohan iz naadaa min qablu fastajabnaa lahoo fanajjainaahu wa ahlahoo minal karbil 'azeem
And [mention] Noah, when he called [to Allah] before [that time], so We responded to him and saved him and his family from the great flood.
21:77 Wa nasarnaahu minal qawmil lazeena kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa; innahum kkaanoo qawma saw'in fa-aghraq naahum ajma'een
And We saved him from the people who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a people of evil, so We drowned them, all together.
21:78 Wa Daawooda wa Sulaimaana iz yahkumaani fil harsi iz nafashat feehi ghanamul qawmi wa kunnaa lihukmihim shaahideen
And [mention] David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field – when the sheep of a people overran it [at night], and We were witness to their judgement.
21:79 Fafahhamnaahaa sulaimaan; wa kullan aatainaa hukmanw wa'ilmanw wa sakh kharnaa ma'a Daawoodal jibaala yusabbihna wattayr; wa kunnaa faa'ileen
And We gave understanding of the case to Solomon, and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to exalt [Us], along with David and [also] the birds. And We were doing [that].
21:80 Wa 'allamanaahu san'ata laboosil lakum lituhsinakum mim baasikum fahal antum shaakiroon
And We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful?
21:81 Wa li Sulaimaanar reeha 'aasifatan tajree bi amriheee ilal ardil latee baaraknaa feehaa; wa kunnaa bikulli shai'in 'aalimeen
And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And We are ever, of all things, Knowing.
And of the devils were those who dived for him and did work other than that. And We were of them a guardian.
21:83 Wa Ayyooba iz naadaa Rabbahooo annee massaniyad durru wa Anta arhamur raahimeen
And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful."
21:84 Fastajabnaa lahoo fakashaf naa maa bihee min durrinw wa aatainaahu ahlahoo wa mislahum ma'ahum rahmatam min 'indinaa wa zikraa lil'aabideen
So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allah].
21:85 Wa Ismaa'eela wa Idreesa wa Zal Kifli kullum minas saabireen
And [mention] Ishmael and Idrees and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.
21:86 Wa adkhalnaahum fee rahmatinaa innahum minas saaliheen
And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous.
21:87 Wa Zan Nooni iz zahaba mughaadiban fazaanna al lan naqdira 'alaihi fanaanna al lan naqdira 'alaihi fanaadaa fiz zulumaati al laaa ilaaha illaaa Anta Subhaanaka innee kuntu minaz zaalimeen
And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
21:88 Fastajabnaa lahoo wa najjainaahu minal ghamm; wa kazaalika nunjil mu'mineen
So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.
21:89 Wa Zakariyyaaa iz naadaa Rabbahoo Rabbi laa tazarnee fardanw wa Anta khairul waariseen
And [mention] Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors."
21:90 Fastajabnaa lahoo wa wahabnaa lahoo Yahyaa Wa aslahnaa lahoo zawjah; innahum kaanoo yusaari'oona fil khairaati wa yad'oonanaa raghabanw wa rahabaa; wa kaanoo lanaa khaashi'een
So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.
21:91 Wallateee ahsanat farjahaa fanafakhnaa feehaa mir roohinaa wa ja'alnaahaa wabnahaaa Aayatal lil'aalameen
And [mention] the one who guarded her chastity, so We blew into her [garment] through Our angel [Gabriel], and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.
21:92 Inna haaziheee ummatukum ummatanw waahidatanw wa Ana Rabbukum fa'budoon
Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.
21:93 Wa taqatta'ooo amrahum bainahum kullun ilainaaa raaji'oon
And [yet] they divided their affair among themselves, [but] all to Us will return.
So whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer – no denial will there be for his effort, and indeed We, of it, are recorders.
21:95 Wa haraamun 'alaa qaryatin ahlaknaahaaa annahum laa yarji'oon
And there is prohibition upon [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will [ever] return
21:96 Hattaaa izaa futihat Yaajooju wa Maajooju wa hum min kulli hadabiny yansiloon
Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend
21:97 Waqtarabal wa'dul haqqu fa-izaa hiya shaakhisatun absaarul lazeena kafaroo yaawailanaa qad kunna fee ghaflatim min haaza bal kunnaa zaalimeen
And [when] the true promise has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, while they say], "O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this; rather, we were wrongdoers."
21:98 Innakum wa maa ta'budoona min doonil laahi hasabu Jahannama antum lahaa waaridoon
Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.
21:99 Law kaana haaa'ulaaa'i aalihatam maa waradoohaa wa kullun feehaa khaalidoon
Had these [false deities] been [actual] gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein.
21:100 Lahum feehaa zafeerunw wa hum feehaa laa yasma'oon
For them therein is heavy sighing, and they therein will not hear.
21:101 Innal lazeena sabaqat lahum minnal husnaaa ulaaa'ika 'anhaa mub'adoon
Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us – they are from it far removed.
21:102 Laa yasma'oona hasee sahaa wa hum fee mash tahat anfusuhum khaalidoon
They will not hear its sound, while they are, in that which their souls desire, abiding eternally.
21:103 Laa yahzunuhumul faza'ul akbaru wa tatalaq qaahumul malaaa'ikatu haazaa Yawmukumul lazee kuntum too'adoon
They will not be grieved by the greatest terror, and the angels will meet them, [saying], "This is your Day which you have been promised" –
21:104 Yawma natwis samaaa'a kataiyis sijilli lilkutub; kamaa badaanaa awwala khalqin nu'eeduh; wa'dan 'alainaa; innaa kunna faa'ileen
The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.
21:105 Wa laqad katabnaa fiz Zaboori mim ba'diz zikri annal arda yarisuhaa 'ibaadi yas saalihoon
And We have already written in the book [of Psalms] after the [previous] mention that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants.
21:106 Inna fee haaza labalaa ghal liqawmin 'aabideen
Indeed, in this [Qur'an] is notification for a worshipping people.
21:107 Wa maaa arsalnaaka illaa rahmatal lil'aalameen
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.
21:108 Qul innamaa yoohaa ilaiya annamaaa ilaahukum illaahunw Waahid, fahal antum muslimoon
Say, "It is only revealed to me that your god is but one God; so will you be Muslims [in submission to Him]?"
21:109 Fa in tawallaw faqul aazantukum 'alaa sawaaa'; wa in adreee aqareebun am ba'eedum maa too'adoon
But if they turn away, then say, "I have announced to [all of] you equally. And I know not whether near or far is that which you are promised.
Indeed, He knows what is declared of speech, and He knows what you conceal.
And I know not; perhaps it is a trial for you and enjoyment for a time."
21:112 Qaala Rabbih kum bil haqq; wa Rabbunar Rahmaa nul musta'aanu 'alaa maa tasifoon
[The Prophet] has said, "My Lord, judge [between us] in truth. And our Lord is the Most Merciful, the one whose help is sought against that which you describe."
FAQ
How many prophets are mentioned in Surah Al-Anbiya?
The surah references a substantial number of prophets, including Ibrahim, Lut, Ishaq, Yaqub, Nuh, Dawud, Sulaiman, Ayyub, Ismail, Idris, Dhul-Kifl, Dhun-Nun (Yunus), and Zakariya and Yahya, among others, though many of these accounts are brief, often only a few verses each, rather than extended narratives.
What happened when Ibrahim was thrown into the fire?
After Ibrahim challenged his people's idol worship and broke their idols, they responded by throwing him into a fire. The surah records God's direct command to the fire: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim." He emerged unharmed, presented in the surah as a clear sign of God's power despite his people's continued opposition.
What is the significance of Yunus's dua in the fish?
Yunus's supplication, declaring there is no god but God, exalting Him, and acknowledging his wrongdoing, is widely cited in Islamic tradition as a model prayer for distress and difficulty. The surah states this call was answered and connects Yunus's specific rescue to a broader principle about how believers generally are saved through sincere, humble appeal to God.
What judgment did Dawud and Sulaiman make regarding the field?
The surah references an episode where both were asked to judge a matter involving a field grazed upon by someone's sheep at night, noting that Sulaiman's understanding of the correct judgment is specifically highlighted, though both are described as having been given sound judgment and knowledge by God.
What does the surah say about Ayyub's trial and recovery?
The surah describes Ayyub calling upon his Lord during adversity, after which God removed his affliction and restored his family, doubling their number as a mercy. The account is notably brief compared to broader traditions about Ayyub's suffering, focusing specifically on his appeal and its answer.
What does verse 107 mean by calling the Prophet "a mercy to all the worlds"?
This verse is widely understood by scholars as establishing the universal scope of the Prophet Muhammad's message, extending beyond any single tribe, nation, or era, and is frequently cited in discussions of Islam's claim to be a message intended for all of humanity rather than a specific people alone.
Why does the surah move through so many prophets so briefly?
Scholars explain this structure as building a cumulative argument rather than providing detailed individual biography: by showing the same essential message, worship of one God alone, delivered consistently across vastly different prophets, eras, and circumstances, the surah demonstrates the unity and continuity of prophetic revelation as a whole.
Final Thoughts
Surah Al-Anbiya moves at a pace that can feel almost rushed compared to the extended, detailed storytelling found in surahs like Yusuf, yet this speed serves its purpose: by compressing more than a dozen prophetic accounts into a single surah, it demonstrates that the call to worship one God alone was never isolated to one time, place, or people, but ran consistently through every era the surah touches. Reading these brief accounts together, Ibrahim's confrontation, Ayyub's patience, Yunus's distress and rescue, which single moment stands out as most directly relevant to a difficulty you are facing in your own life right now?
