Surah Ash-Shu'ara is built differently from most surahs. After a short opening about the Prophet's grief over his people's rejection, it tells the stories of seven prophets, Musa, Ibrahim, Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut, and Shu'ayb, and closes every one of them with the same two sentences: in this there is a sign, yet most of them did not believe, and your Lord is the Almighty, the Merciful. The repetition is deliberate. It tells the listener that the same pattern keeps happening, and that it keeps ending the same way. This guide covers the surah's structure, each of its seven accounts, and why a surah about prophets takes the name "The Poets."

What Is Surah Ash-Shu'ara?

Surah Ash-Shu'ara is the 26th surah of the Quran. It is a Makki surah with 227 verses, which makes it one of the longer surahs of the Makkan period. It opens with the disconnected letters Ta Seen Meem, whose precise meaning is known only to Allah.

The name Ash-Shu'ara means "The Poets." It comes from the last section of the surah, verses 224 to 227, which speak about poets and how the Quran differs from poetry. Some scholars note that these closing verses, or part of them, were revealed in Madinah, though the surah as a whole is counted as Makki.

The Opening: Comfort for the Prophet

The surah begins by addressing the Prophet directly. Verse 3 says: "Perhaps you would kill yourself with grief that they will not become believers." The verse shows how heavily the people's refusal weighed on him. It is followed by a reminder that if Allah had willed, He could have sent down a sign that would have made their necks bow in submission, but belief that is forced is not what is being asked of them.

This opening sets the purpose of everything that follows. The stories of the earlier prophets are told in part to comfort the Prophet: others before him also called their people with patience and were also rejected.

The Refrain After Each Story

After each of the seven accounts, the surah repeats: "Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers. And indeed, your Lord is the Almighty, the Merciful."

The refrain carries two messages at once. The first is a statement of fact: rejection was the usual response, and the majority did not believe. The second joins two of Allah's names. Al-Aziz, the Almighty, is the One who destroyed those who persisted in denial. Ar-Rahim, the Merciful, is the One who saved the prophets and the believers with them. Both names appear together every time, so that the listener hears justice and mercy side by side.

Musa and Pharaoh

The longest account is that of Musa. He is told to go to Pharaoh's people and he answers with honest worry: he fears they will deny him, his chest will tighten, his tongue is not fluent, and he asks that Harun be sent with him. Allah grants this.

When Musa and Harun come to Pharaoh, he reminds Musa that he was raised in Pharaoh's own household as a child, and brings up the man Musa killed. Musa admits it and says he did it while still astray. When Pharaoh asks, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?", Musa answers with the heavens, the earth, and what is between them, and then with Pharaoh's own forefathers. Pharaoh calls him mad.

The contest with the magicians ends with the magicians falling down in prostration. Then comes the moment at the sea. The followers of Musa see Pharaoh's army and say, "We are going to be overtaken." Musa answers: "No. Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me." The sea is split and the people cross. The moment is remembered for the calm of that single sentence.

Ibrahim and the Sound Heart

Ibrahim's account is told mostly through his own words. He asks his father and his people what they worship, and they answer that they have always worshipped idols and hold to them. Ibrahim points out that these idols cannot hear a call, benefit anyone, or harm anyone.

He then describes his Lord in a few short lines: the One who created me and it is He who guides me, and it is He who feeds me and gives me drink, and when I am ill, it is He who cures me. Scholars have pointed out that he places the cure with Allah, and speaks of the illness in a way that does not connect it directly to Him, as a matter of courtesy in speech.

Ibrahim's prayer in verses 83 to 89 asks for wisdom, for a good name among later generations, and for a place in the Garden. It describes a day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyone, except the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart (qalb salim). Scholars have explained this as a heart free of shirk, doubt, and hidden disease.

Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut, and Shu'ayb

The remaining five accounts are shorter and follow a similar pattern. Each prophet introduces himself to his people as a trustworthy messenger, tells them to fear Allah and obey him, and says he asks no payment, since his reward is only from the Lord of the worlds. From Nuh onward, this opening is almost word for word the same.

Each prophet also speaks to a problem specific to his people. Hud and Salih call their people to gratitude for the blessings they enjoy and not to waste them on pride. Lut calls his people away from a shameful act that no one before them had done, and Shu'ayb calls his people to give full measure and weigh with a true balance, and not to cheat people of what is theirs.

Shu'ayb's people are called the Companions of the Thicket (Ashab al-Aykah). Scholars differ on whether they are the same people as the people of Madyan, or a separate people living nearby to whom he was also sent.

The Quran's Descent and the Warning to the Closest Relatives

The surah returns to the Quran in verses 192 to 199, saying that it was sent down by the Trustworthy Spirit (Jibreel) upon the Prophet's heart, in a clear Arabic language, so that he would be a warner. It says that its mention is found in the earlier scriptures, and that the scholars of the Children of Israel recognize it.

Verse 214 then commands the Prophet: "And warn your closest kindred." A report in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim connects this verse to the day the Prophet climbed Mount Safa, called the clans of Quraysh one by one, and warned them. Before warning them, he asked whether they would believe him if he said that a cavalry was on the other side of the hill. They said yes, because they had never known him to lie.

Why the Surah Ends With the Poets

The Makkans accused the Prophet of being a poet. The final verses answer this. They say that the deviant follow the poets, that the poets wander in every valley, and that they say what they do not do.

Verse 227 then makes an exception for poets who believe, do righteous deeds, remember Allah often, and defend themselves after being wronged. The verse shows that the Quran does not condemn poetry as such. What it rejects is the idea that its message is the kind of speech that follows imagination and impulse and has nothing behind the words.

26:34 Qaala lilmala-i hawlahooo inna haazaa lasaahirun 'aleem

[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.

26:35 Yureedu ai yukhrijakum min ardikum bisihrihee famaazaa taamuroon

26:36 Qaalooo arjih wa akhaahu wab'as filmadaaa'ini haashireen

They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

26:38 Fa jumi'as saharatu limeeqaati Yawmim ma'loom

So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well-known day.

26:39 Wa qeela linnaasi hal antum mujtami'oon

And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate

26:40 La'allanaa nattabi'us saharata in kaanoo humul ghaalibeen

That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"

26:41 Falammaa jaaa'as saharatu qaaloo li Fir'awna a'inna lanaa la ajjran in kunnaa nahnul ghaalibeen

And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"

He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."

26:43 Qaala lahum Moosaaa alqoo maaa antum mulqoon

Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

26:44 Fa alqaw hibaalahum wa 'isiyyahum wa qaaloo bi'izzati Fir'awna innaa lanahnul ghaaliboon

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."

26:45 Fa alqaa Moosaa 'asaahu fa izaa hiya talqafu maa yaafikoon

Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

26:46 Fa ulqiyas saharatu saajideen

So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah].

26:47 Qaalooo aamannaa bi Rabbil 'aalameen

They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

26:48 Rabbi Moosaa wa Haaroon

The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

26:49 Qaala aamantum lahoo qabla an aazana lakum innahoo lakabeerukumul lazee 'alla makumus sihra falasawfa ta'lamoon; la uqatti'anna aidiyakum wa arjulakum min khilaafinw wa la usallibanna kum ajma'een

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed Moses before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

26:50 Qaaloo la daira innaaa ilaa Rabbinaa munqalliboon

They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

26:51 Innaa natma'u ai yaghfira lanaa Rabbunna khataa yaanaaa an kunnaaa awwalal mu'mineen

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

26:52 Wa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaaa an asri bi'ibaadeee innakum muttaba'oon

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

26:53 Fa arsala Fir'awnu filmadaaa'ini haashireen

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers

26:54 Inna haaa'ulaaa'i lashir zimatun qaleeloon

[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

26:55 Wa innahum lanaa laghaaa'izoon

And indeed, they are enraging us,

26:56 Wa innaa lajamee'un haaziroon

And indeed, we are a cautious society… "

26:57 Fa akhrajnaahum min Jannaatinw wa 'uyoon

So We removed them from gardens and springs

26:58 Wa kunoozinw wa ma qaamin kareem

And treasures and honorable station –

26:59 Kazaalika wa awrasnaahaa Baneee Israaa'eel

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

26:60 Fa atba'oohum mushriqeen

So they pursued them at sunrise.

26:61 Falammaa taraaa'al jam'aani qaala as haabu Moosaaa innaa lamudrakoon

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

26:62 Qaala kallaaa inna ma'iya Rabbee sa yahdeen

[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

26:63 Fa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaaa anidrib bi'asaakal bahra fanfalaqa fakaana kullu firqin kattawdil 'azeem

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

26:64 Wa azlafnaa sammal aakhareen

And We advanced thereto the pursuers.

26:65 Wa anjainaa Moosaa wa mam ma'ahooo ajma'een

And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.

26:66 Summa aghraqnal aakhareen

Then We drowned the others.

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

26:68 Wa inna Rabbaka la Huwal 'Azeezur Raheem

And indeed, your Lord – He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

26:69 Watlu 'alaihim naba-a Ibraaheem

And recite to them the news of Abraham,

26:70 Iz qaala li abeehi wa qawmihee maa ta'budoon

When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"

26:71 Qaaloo na'budu asnaaman fanazallu lahaa 'aakifeen

They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."

26:72 Qaala hal yasma'oona kum iz tad'oon

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

26:73 Aw yanfa'oonakum aw yadurroon

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

26:74 Qaaloo bal wajadnaaa aabaaa 'anaa kazaalika yaf'aloon

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

26:75 Qaala afara 'aitum maa kuntum ta'budoon

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

26:76 Antum wa aabaaa'ukumul aqdamoon

You and your ancient forefathers?

26:77 Fa innahum 'aduwwwul leee illaa Rabbal 'aalameen

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,

26:78 Allazee khalaqanee fa Huwa yahdeen

Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.

26:79 Wallazee Huwa yut'imunee wa yasqeen

And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.

26:80 Wa izaa mardtu fahuwa yashfeen

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

26:81 Wallazee yumeetunee summa yuhyeen

And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life

26:82 Wallazeee atma'u ai yaghfira lee khateee' atee Yawmad Deen

And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."

26:83 Rabbi hab lee hukmanw wa alhiqnee bis saaliheen

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

26:84 Waj'al lee lisaana sidqin fil aakhireen

And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations.

26:85 Waj'alnee minw warasati Jannnatin Na'eem

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

26:86 Waghfir li abeee innahoo kaana mind daalleen

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

26:87 Wa laa tukhzinee Yawma yub'asoon

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected –

26:88 Yawma laa yanfa'u maalunw wa laa banoon

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

26:89 Illaa man atal laaha biqalbin saleem

But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."

26:90 Wa uzlifatil Jannatu lilmuttaqeen

And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

26:91 Wa burrizatil Jaheemu lilghaaween

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

26:92 Wa qeela lahum aina maa kuntum ta'budoon

And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship

26:93 Min doonil laahi hal yansuroonakum aw yantasiroon

Other than Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?"

26:94 Fakubkiboo feehaa hum walghaawoon

So they will be overturned into Hellfire, they and the deviators

26:95 Wa junoodu Ibleesa ajma'oon

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

26:96 Qaaloo wa hum feehaa yakkhtasimoon

They will say while they dispute therein,

26:97 Tallaahi in kunnaa lafee dalaalim mubeen

"By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error

26:98 Iz nusawweekum bi Rabbil 'aalameen

When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.

26:99 Wa maaa adallanaaa illal mujrimoon

And no one misguided us except the criminals.

26:100 Famaa lanaa min shaa fi'een

So now we have no intercessors

26:101 Wa laa sadeeqin hameem

And not a devoted friend.

26:102 Falaw anna lanaa karratan fanakoona minal mu'mineen

Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers… "

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

26:104 Wa inna Rabbaka la Huwal 'Azeezur Raheem

And indeed, your Lord – He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

26:105 Kazzabat qawmu Noohinil Mursaleen

The people of Noah denied the messengers

26:106 Iz qaala lahum akhoohum Noohun alaa tattaqoon

When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?

26:107 Innee lakum Rasoolun ameen

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

26:108 Fattaqullaaha wa atee'oon

So fear Allah and obey me.

26:109 Wa maaa as'alukum 'alaihi min ajrin in ajriya illaa 'alaa Rabbil 'aalameen

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

26:110 Fattaqul laaha wa atee'oon

So fear Allah and obey me."

26:111 Qaalooo anu'minu laka wattaba 'akal arzaloon

They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"

He said, "And what is my knowledge of what they used to do?

26:113 In hisaabuhum illaa 'alaa Rabbee law tash'uroon

Their account is only upon my Lord, if you [could] perceive.

26:114 Wa maaa ana bitaaridil mu'mineen

And I am not one to drive away the believers.

26:115 In ana illaa nazeerum mubeen

I am only a clear warner."

They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."

26:117 Qaala Rabbi inna qawmee kazzaboon

He said, "My Lord, indeed my people have denied me.

26:118 Faftab bainee wa bai nahum fat hanw wa najjinee wa mam ma'iya minal mu'mineen

Then judge between me and them with decisive judgement and save me and those with me of the believers."

26:119 Fa anjainaahu wa mamma'ahoo fil fulkil mashhoon

So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

26:120 Summa aghraqnaa ba'dul baaqeen

Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones.

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

26:122 Wa inna Rabbaka la huwal 'Azeezur Raheem

And indeed, your Lord – He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

26:123 Kazzabat 'Aadunil mursaleen

'Aad denied the messengers

26:124 Iz qaala lahum akhoohum Hoodun alaa tattaqoon

When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?

26:199 Faqara ahoo 'alaihim maa kaanoo bihee mu'mineen

And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it.

26:200 Kazaalika salaknaahu fee quloobil mujrimeen

Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.

26:201 Laa yu'minoona bihee hattaa yarawul 'azaabal aleem

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

26:202 Fayaatiyahum baghtatanw wa hum laa yash'uroon

And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.

26:203 Fa yaqooloo hal nahnu munzaroon

And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

26:204 Aafabi 'azaabinaa yasta'jiloon

So for Our punishment are they impatient?

26:205 Aara'aita im matta'naahum sineen

Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

26:206 Summa jaaa'ahum maa kaanoo yoo'adoon

And then there came to them that which they were promised?

26:207 Maaa aghnaaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yumaatoo'oon

They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.

26:208 Wa maaa ahlaknaa min qaryatin illaa lahaa munziroon

And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

26:209 Zikraa wa maa kunnaa zaalimeen

As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.

26:210 Wa maa tanazzalat bihish Shayaateen

And the devils have not brought the revelation down.

26:211 Wa maa yambaghee lahum wa maa yastatee'oon

It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.

26:212 Innahum 'anis sam'i lama'zooloon

Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.

So do not invoke with Allah another deity and [thus] be among the punished.

26:214 Wa anzir 'asheeratakal aqrabeen

And warn, [O Muhammad], your closest kindred.

26:215 Wakhfid janaahaka limanit taba 'aka minal mu'mineen

And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers.

26:216 Fa in asawka faqul innee bareee'um mimmmaa ta'maloon

And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."

26:217 Wa tawakkal alal 'Azeezir Raheem

And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

26:218 Allazee yaraaka heena taqoom

Who sees you when you arise

26:219 Wa taqallubaka fis saajideen

And your movement among those who prostrate.

26:220 Innahoo Huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem

Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

26:221 Hal unabbi'ukum 'alaa man tanazzalush Shayaateen

Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

26:222 Tanazzalu 'alaa kulli affaakin aseem

They descend upon every sinful liar.

26:223 Yulqoonas sam'a wa aksaruhum aaziboon

They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars.

26:224 Washshu 'araaa'u yattabi 'uhumul ghaawoon

And the poets – [only] the deviators follow them;

26:225 Alam tara annahum fee kulli waadiny yaheemoon

Do you not see that in every valley they roam

26:226 Wa annahum yaqooloona ma laa yaf'aloon

And that they say what they do not do? –

26:227 Illal lazeena aamanoo w a'amilus saalihaati wa zakarul laaha kaseeranw wantasaroo mim ba'di maa zulimoo; wa saya'lamul lazeena zalamooo aiya munqalbiny yanqaliboon

Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.

FAQ

Why is the surah called Ash-Shu'ara, "The Poets"?

+

The name comes from the last verses of the surah, 224 to 227, which discuss poets. These verses answer the Makkan claim that the Prophet was a poet, and they separate the Quran from poetry that follows imagination and desire.

Which prophets are mentioned in Surah Ash-Shu'ara?

+

The surah tells the stories of seven prophets: Musa, Ibrahim, Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut, and Shu'ayb. Each account ends with the same refrain about the sign and the rejection of most of the people.

What does the repeated verse after each story mean?

+

It says that in each story there is a sign, yet most of the people did not believe, and that Allah is both the Almighty and the Merciful. It reminds the listener that rejection was common, that the persistent deniers were destroyed, and that the believers were saved.

What does it mean that the Prophet might "kill himself with grief"?

+

Verse 3 describes how deeply the Prophet cared about the guidance of his people. Scholars understand it as a gentle reminder from Allah that his duty was to deliver the message, and that he was not responsible for forcing belief on them.

What is a "sound heart" in Ibrahim's prayer?

+

Scholars explain the sound heart (qalb salim) as a heart that has been cleared of shirk, doubt, envy, and the other diseases of the heart, so that it comes to Allah in sincerity. Verse 89 describes it as the one thing that will benefit a person on the Day when wealth and children will not.

Why does Ibrahim say Allah cures him when he is ill, but does not say Allah makes him ill?

+

Scholars point out that in verse 80 he says "when I am ill, it is He who cures me," placing the illness on himself in speech and the cure with Allah. They take this as an example of courtesy when speaking about Allah, even though everything is by His decree.

Does the surah condemn poetry?

+

No. The final verses condemn poets who follow desire and say what they do not do. Verse 227 excepts those who believe, do righteous deeds, remember Allah often, and defend themselves after being wronged.

Who were the Companions of the Thicket?

+

They were the people to whom Shu'ayb was sent, called Ashab al-Aykah in the Quran. Scholars differ on whether they were the same community as the people of Madyan or a neighboring people to whom he was also sent.

Final Thoughts

Surah Ash-Shu'ara repeats the same two sentences seven times, and by the end the reader no longer hears them as repetition. They sound like a steady pattern running through history: a prophet calls with patience, most people refuse, the persistent deniers are overtaken, and the believers are saved by the One who is both Almighty and Merciful. The prophet's own grief at the start of the surah and the wording of the poets at its end show who it was written to comfort and what it was written to answer. Which of the seven accounts, Musa at the sea, Ibrahim's sound heart, or Shu'ayb's call for honest measure, speaks most directly to a situation you are facing now?
