75 ayat, after the Battle of Badr
Surah No.
Eighth chapter of the Quran
Juz
Spans Juz 9 and 10
Surah Al-Anfal, “The Spoils of War,” is the eighth chapter of the Quran, revealed in Madinah shortly after the Battle of Badr in the second year after the migration. It is the Quran’s commentary on the first great trial of the Muslim community: 313 poorly equipped believers facing an army three times their number, and returning victorious. But the surah is not a celebration of military success. It is a lesson in where victory comes from, how it must be handled, and what it costs a community to stay worthy of it.
The surah opens with a dispute among the companions over the distribution of the war booty from Badr, and Allah settles it in the first verse: the spoils belong to Allah and His Messenger. From that practical question, the surah expands into the qualities of true believers, the unseen help at Badr, the ethics of warfare, the treatment of prisoners, the danger of treachery, and the bonds of the believing community. It is one of the most practical surahs in the Quran, because it was revealed to people living through the events it describes. This guide covers its context, its themes, its key verses, and the full Arabic text.
Al-Anfal forms a natural pair with the next surah, At-Tawbah, which continues the discussion of struggle, treaties, and the testing of the community. Read together, the two surahs are the Quran’s complete teaching on the public life of the believers: how they fight, how they make peace, how they handle wealth, and how they tell the sincere from the hypocrites.

Themes and Key Topics of Surah Al-Anfal
Al-Anfal moves between the spiritual and the practical without ever separating them. Its themes can be grouped into five: the true qualities of believers, the divine hand at Badr, the rules of war and peace, the danger of internal division, and the bonds that hold the community together.
Who Are the True Believers? (8:2-4)
Before discussing a single battle, the surah defines the people fit to fight one. The true believers are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, whose faith increases when His verses are recited, who rely upon their Lord, establish prayer, and spend from what He provided them. Faith, in this definition, is not a label but a set of observable states: reverence, growth, trust, worship, and generosity. The surah returns to this definition at its end, describing the believers, the emigrants, and the helpers as allies of one another, and it is this moral portrait, not numbers or weapons, that the surah presents as the real source of strength.
Badr: Victory Comes from Allah Alone
Verses 5 to 18 retell the Battle of Badr as a theological event. The Muslims were reluctant to face the Quraysh army, but Allah brought the two sides together. He sent down rain to purify them and firm their footing, He cast drowsiness over them as a security, and He reinforced them with a thousand angels arriving in succession. Verse 17 then delivers the surah’s central claim about the battle: “You did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them, and you threw not when you threw, but it was Allah who threw.” The companions’ courage is not denied; it is relocated. They acted, but the effect was Allah’s.
This is why the surah warns so sternly against pride after victory. Verse 19 tells the Quraysh that if they return to hostility, Allah will return to supporting the believers, and verse 47 warns the Muslims not to march out boastfully, showing off to people. Victory is a trust, not a trophy, and the surah treats arrogance after Badr as a greater danger than the Quraysh army had been before it.
The Spoils and the Fifth (8:1, 8:41)
The surah’s name comes from its opening question about the anfal, the spoils of war. Verse 1 establishes the principle: they belong to Allah and His Messenger, to be distributed by divine command, not seized by the fighters. Verse 41 then gives the detailed rule: a fifth of all spoils goes to Allah, the Messenger, his near relatives, the orphans, the needy, and the traveler. The remaining four-fifths go to the fighters. The wisdom is social as much as legal: wealth gained in the community’s struggle must serve the community’s vulnerable, not enrich its strong.
Ethics of War and the Preference for Peace
Al-Anfal lays down rules of engagement that were revolutionary for seventh-century Arabia. Do not turn your backs in battle except as a tactic. Prepare whatever strength you can, as deterrence. If the enemy inclines toward peace, incline toward it too and rely upon Allah. Treaties must be honored, and if treachery is feared, the treaty must be renounced openly, never broken secretly. Prisoners are to be treated with the awareness that Allah knows what is in their hearts. The surah permits fighting against aggression and persecution, but it frames every permission inside a larger ethic: justice, honesty, and the constant preference for peace.
Verse 61, “if they incline to peace, then incline to it,” is one of the most cited verses in Islamic discussions of war and peace. It makes peace the default response to a genuine offer of peace, and it pairs the command with trust in Allah, as if to answer the fear that accepting peace might be weakness. Strength, the surah argues, is shown in knowing when to stop fighting.
Unity: The Hearts Brought Together
The surah closes its major themes with a meditation on what held the Muslim community together. Verse 63 reminds the Prophet that it was Allah who brought the believers’ hearts together, and that even if he had spent everything on earth, he could not have united them. The Aws and Khazraj had been blood enemies for generations; faith made them brothers. The lesson is aimed at every later generation: unity is a divine gift that must be protected, and the surah’s repeated warnings against disputing, “lest you lose courage and your strength depart,” show how easily it is lost.

Virtues and Benefits of Surah Al-Anfal
Al-Anfal’s virtue lies in what it builds in its reader: the character of a person Allah supports. Its opening verses are a mirror every believer can hold up daily. Do our hearts tremble at the mention of Allah? Does our faith increase when we hear His verses? Do we pray, do we give, do we trust? The surah does not allow its reader to admire Badr from a distance; it asks whether they possess the qualities of the people of Badr.
The surah is also a manual for leadership and collective action. Its warnings against dispute, its insistence on obeying Allah and His Messenger in public affairs, its rules for distributing gains fairly, and its preference for peace over continued conflict are principles that apply far beyond the battlefield: to families, organizations, and communities. Many readers return to Al-Anfal when facing a difficult collective decision, because it teaches that success comes from unity under divine guidance, not from cleverness or numbers.
Finally, the surah offers one of the Quran’s greatest comforts to the outnumbered and the underestimated. Badr is the permanent proof that Allah’s support is not proportional to human strength. Verse 66 promises that Allah lightens the burden and that a patient hundred can overcome two hundred by His permission. For anyone facing odds that look impossible, Al-Anfal is the surah that says the arithmetic of faith is different.
Key Verses Explained
The verses of Al-Anfal most often quoted, taught, and reflected upon.
The Marks of True Believers (8:2)
“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -” (8:2)
The surah’s definition of faith, placed before any discussion of war. Note the order: the heart’s trembling, then faith’s increase at the verses, then trust, then prayer, then charity. Inner states produce outer actions. It is a complete spiritual diagnostic in one verse, and the surah returns to complete the picture in verses 3 and 4 with the promise of ranks, forgiveness, and noble provision.
It Was Allah Who Threw (8:17)
“And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.” (8:17)
The theological heart of the surah. The Prophet threw a handful of dust at the enemy at Badr, and Allah made it reach every eye. The verse denies the human act only to affirm the divine one behind it: secondary causes are real, but they have no effect without Allah. It is the verse that ends all boasting about Badr, and all despair before any future battle.
Respond to Allah and the Messenger (8:24)
“O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.” (8:24)
A verse about urgency. The call of Allah and His Messenger gives life, and the response must come before the heart is sealed. The image of Allah intervening between a man and his heart is one of the most sobering in the Quran: delay obedience long enough, and the ability to obey may itself be taken. The verse is recited as a warning against postponing repentance and duty.
Wealth and Children Are a Trial (8:28)
“And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.” (8:28)
Placed in a surah about the spoils of war, this verse names the exact temptation the spoils represent. Wealth and children are not evils; they are tests, and the test is whether they bring you closer to Allah or pull you away. The verse reframes every blessing as a question, and its answer determines whether the blessing was truly a blessing.
If They Incline to Peace (8:61)
“And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.” (8:61)
The surah’s great peace verse, revealed in a chapter about war. The command is unconditional in its wording: if they incline to peace, incline to it. The pairing with reliance on Allah addresses the suspicion that peacemaking is weakness. In the surah’s logic, the strong are those who can stop fighting when justice allows it.
He Brought Their Hearts Together (8:63)
“And brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise.” (8:63)
The surah’s closing meditation on unity. No wealth, no diplomacy, no shared interest could have united the warring tribes of Madinah; only faith did. The verse is both a gratitude and a warning: the unity believers enjoy is a divine gift, and gifts can be withdrawn when they are taken for granted through dispute and division.

1:1 Yas'aloonaka 'anil anfaali qulil anfaalu lillaahi war Rasooli fattaqul laaha wa ahlihoo zaata bainikum wa atee'ul laaha wa Rasoolahooo in kuntum mu'mineen
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers.
2:2 Innamal mu'minoonal lazeena izaa zukiral laahu wajilat quloobuhum wa izaa tuliyat 'alaihim Aayaatuhoo zaadat hum eemaananw wa 'alaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely –
3:3 Allazeena yuqeemoonas Salaata wa mimmaa razaqnaahum yunfiqoon
The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
4:4 Ulaaa'ika humul mu'minoona haqqaa; lahum darajaatun 'inda Rabbihim wa magh firatunw wa rizqun kareem
Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.
5:5 Kaamaaa akhrajaka Rabbuka mim baitika bilhaqq; wa inna fareeqam minal mu'mineena lakaarihoon
[It is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of Badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling,
6:6 Yujaadiloonaka fil haqqi ba'da maa tabaiyana kaannamaa yasaaqoona ilal mawti wa hum uanzuroon
Arguing with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death while they were looking on.
[Remember, O believers], when Allah promised you one of the two groups – that it would be yours – and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But Allah intended to establish the truth by His words and to eliminate the disbelievers
8:8 Liyuhiqqal haqqa wa tubtilal baatila wa law karihal mujrimoon
That He should establish the truth and abolish falsehood, even if the criminals disliked it.
[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another."
10:10 Wa maa ja'alahul laahu illaa bushraa wa litatma'inna bihee quloobukum; wa man nasru illaa min 'indil laah; innal laaha Azeezun Hakeem
And Allah made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby. And victory is not but from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
11:11 Iz yughashsheekumun nu'assa amanatam minhu wa yunazzilu 'alaikum minas samaaa'i maaa'al liyutah hirakum bihee wa yuzhiba 'ankum rijzash Shaitaani wa liyarbita 'ala quloobikum wa yusabbita bihil aqdaam
[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.
12:12 Iz yoohee Rabbuka ilal malaaa'ikati annee ma'akum fasabbitul lazeena aamanoo; sa ulqee fee quloobil lazeena kafarur ru'ba fadriboo fawqal a'naaqi wadriboo minhum kulla banaan
[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip."
13:13 Zaalika bi annahum shaaaqqul laaha wa Rasoolah; wa mai yushaqiqil laaha wa Rasoolahoo fa innal laaha shadeedul 'iqaab
That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger – indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
14:14 Zaalikum fazooqoohu wa anna lilkaafireena 'azaaban Naar
"That [is yours], so taste it." And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.
15:15 Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo izaa laqeetumul lazeena kafaroo zahfan falaa tuwalloohumul adbaar
O you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [for battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight].
16:16 Wa mai yuwallihim yawma'izin duburahooo illaa mutaharrifal liqitaalin aw mutahaiyizan ilaa fi'atin faqad baaa'a bighadabim minal laahi wa maawaahu Jahannamu wa bi'sal maseer
And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allah, and his refuge is Hell – and wretched is the destination.
17:17 Falam taqtuloohum wa laakinnal laaha qatalahum; wa maa ramaita iz ramaita wa laakinnal laaha ramaa; wa liyubliyal mu'mineena minhu balaaa'an hasanaa; innal laaha Samee'un Aleem
And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
18:18 Zaalikum wa annal laaha moohinu kaidil kaafireen
That [is so], and [also] that Allah will weaken the plot of the disbelievers.

If you [disbelievers] seek the victory – the defeat has come to you. And if you desist [from hostilities], it is best for you; but if you return [to war], We will return, and never will you be availed by your [large] company at all, even if it should increase; and [that is] because Allah is with the believers.
20:20 Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo atee'ul laaha wa Rasoolahoo wa laa tawallaw 'anhu wa antum tasm'oon
O you who have believed, obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].
21:21 Wa laa takoonoo kallazeena qaaloo sami'naa wa hum laa yasma'oon
And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.
22:22 Inna sharrad dawaaabbi 'indal laahis summul bukmul lazeena laa ya'qiloon
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
Had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would [still] have turned away, while they were refusing.

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
25:25 Wattaqoo fitnatal laa tuseebannal lazeena zalamoo minkum khaaaassatanw wa'lamooo annal laaha shadeedul 'iqaab
And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you, but He sheltered you, supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things – that you might be grateful.

O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
28:28 Wa'lamooo annamaaa amwaalukum wa awlaadukum fitnatunw wa annal laaha 'indahooo ajrun azeem
And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.

O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
30:30 Wa iz yamkuru bikal lazeena kafaroo liyusbitooka aw yaqtulooka aw yukhrijook; wa yamkuroona wa yamkurul laahu wallaahu khairul maakireen
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples."
32:32 Wa iz qaalul laahumma in kaana haazaa huwal haqqa min 'indika fa amtir 'alainaa hijaaratam minas samaaa'i awi'tinaa bi 'azaabin alaeem
And [remember] when they said, "O Allah, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."
33:33 Wa maa kanal laahu liyu'az zibahum wa anta feehim; wa maa kaanal laahu mu'az zibahum wa hum yastaghfiroon
But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.

But why should Allah not punish them while they obstruct [people] from al-Masjid al- Haram and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteous, but most of them do not know.
35:35 Wa maa kaana Salaatuhum 'indal Baiti illa mukaaa anw-wa tasdiyah; fazooqul 'azaaba bimaa kuntum takfuroon
And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved.

Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved – unto Hell they will be gathered.

[This is] so that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.
38:38 Qul lillazeena kafarooo iny yantahoo yughfar lahum maa qad salafa wa iny ya'oodoo faqad madat sunnatul awwaleen
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] – then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.

And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease – then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.

But if they turn away – then know that Allah is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and Excellent is the helper.

And know that anything you obtain of war booty – then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion – the day when the two armies met. And Allah, over all things, is competent.

[Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined – that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

[Remember, O Muhammad], when Allah showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you [believers] would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter [of whether to fight], but Allah saved [you from that]. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

46:46 Wa atee'ul laaha wa Rasoolahoo wa laa tanaaza'oo fatafshaloo wa tazhaba reehukum wasbiroo; innal laaha ma'as saabireen
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

And do not be like those who came forth from their homes insolently and to be seen by people and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And Allah is encompassing of what they do.

And [remember] when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and said, "No one can overcome you today from among the people, and indeed, I am your protector." But when the two armies sighted each other, he turned on his heels and said, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see; indeed I fear Allah. And Allah is severe in penalty."

[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allah – then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved… They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
51:51 Zaalika bimaa qaddamat aideekum wa anal laaha laisa bizallaamil lil 'abeed
That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allah is not ever unjust to His servants."

[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allah, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in penalty.
53:53 Zaalika bi annal laaha lam yaku mughaiyiran ni matan an'amahaa 'alaa qawmin hattaa yughaiyiroo maa bianfusihim wa annallaaha samee un 'Aleem
That is because Allah would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all [of them] were wrongdoers.
55:55 Inna sharrad dawaaabbi 'indal laahil lazeena kafaroo fahum laa yu'minoon
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are those who have disbelieved, and they will not [ever] believe –
56:56 Allazeena'aahatta min hum summa yanqudoona 'ahdahum fee kulli marratinw wa hum laa yattaqoon
The ones with whom you made a treaty but then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allah.
57:57 Fa immaa tasqafannahum fil harbi fasharrid bihim man khalfahum la'allahum yazzakkaroon
So if you, [O Muhammad], gain dominance over them in war, disperse by [means of] them those behind them that perhaps they will be reminded.
58:58 Wa immaa takhaafana min qawmin khiyaanatan fambiz ilaihim 'alaa sawaaa'; innal laaha laayuhibbul khaaa'ineen
If you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like traitors.
59:59 Wa laa yahsabannal lazeena kafaroo sabaqooo; innahum laa yu'jizoon
And let not those who disbelieve think they will escape. Indeed, they will not cause failure [to Allah].

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
61:61 Wa in janahoo lissalmi fajnah lahaa wa tawakkal 'alal laah; innahoo Huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
62:62 Wa iny yureedooo any-yakhda'ooka fainna hasbakal laah; Huwal lazeee aiyadaka binasrihee wa bilmu'mineen
But if they intend to deceive you – then sufficient for you is Allah. It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers
63:63 Wa allafa baina quloobihim; law anfaqta maa fil ardi jamee'am maaa allafta baina quloobihim wa laakinnallaaha allafa bainahum; innaahoo 'Azeezun Hakeem
And brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise.
64:64 Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu hasbukal laahu wa manittaba 'aka minal mu'mineen
O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allah and for whoever follows you of the believers.
65:65 Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu harridil mu'mineena 'alal qitaal; iny-yakum minkum 'ishroona saabiroona yaghliboo mi'atayn; wa iny-yakum minkum min'atuny yaghlibooo alfam minal lazeena kafaroo bi anahum qawmul laa yafqahoon
O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand.
66:66 Al'aana khaffafal laahu 'ankum wa 'alima anna feekum da'faa; fa-iny yakum minkum mi'atun saabiratuny yaghliboo mi'atayn; wa iny-yakum minkum alfuny yaghlibooo alfaini bi iznil laah; wallaahu ma'as saabireen
Now, Allah has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the steadfast.
67:67 Maa kaana li Nabiyyin ai yakoona lahooo asraa hatta yuskhina fil ard; tureedoona aradad dunyaa wallaahu yureedul Aakhirah; wallaahu 'Azeezun Hakeem
It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
68:68 Law laa Kitaabum minal laahi sabaqa lamassakum fee maaa akhaztum 'azaabun 'azeem
If not for a decree from Allah that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment.
69:69 Fakuloo mimaa ghanimtum halaalan taiyibaa; watta qullaah; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem
So consume what you have taken of war booty [as being] lawful and good, and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
70:70 Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu qul liman feee aideekum minal asraaa iny-ya lamillaahu fee quloobikum khairany yu'tikum khayram mimmaaa ukhiza minkum wa yaghfir lakum; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem
O Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allah knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
71:71 Wa iny-yureedoo khiyaa nataka faqad khaanullaaha min qablu fa amkana minhum; wallaahu 'aleemum Hakeem
But if they intend to betray you – then they have already betrayed Allah before, and He empowered [you] over them. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided – they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate – for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.
73:73 Wallazeena kafaroo ba'duhum awliyaaa'u ba'd; illaa taf'aloohu takun fitnatun fil ardi wa fasaadun kabeer
And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.
74:74 Wallazeena aamanoo wa haajaroo wa jaahadoo fee sabeelil laahi wallazeena aawaw wa nasarooo ulaaa'ika humul mu'minoona haqqaa; lahum maghfiratunw wa rizqun kareem
But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided – it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.
75:75 Wallazeena aamanoo mim ba'du wa haajaroo wa jaahadoo ma;akum faulaaa'ika minkum; wa ulul arhaami baduhum awlaa biba'din fee Kitaabil laah; innal laaha bikulli shai'in 'Aleem
And those who believed after [the initial emigration] and emigrated and fought with you – they are of you. But those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things.
FAQ
What does Al-Anfal mean?
Al-Anfal means “the spoils of war” or “the bounties.” It refers to the war booty taken at the Battle of Badr, about whose distribution the companions asked the Prophet. The surah’s first verse answers that the spoils belong to Allah and His Messenger, to be distributed by divine command.
When was Surah Al-Anfal revealed?
It was revealed in Madinah shortly after the Battle of Badr, which took place in the second year after the migration (624 CE). It is a Madani surah, revealed to a community now facing the practical questions of warfare, wealth, and collective organization, and it spans Juz 9 and Juz 10.
What are the qualities of believers in Surah Al-Anfal?
Verses 2 to 4 list them: hearts that tremble when Allah is mentioned, faith that increases when His verses are recited, reliance upon Allah, establishing prayer, and spending from what Allah provided. These are presented as the inner qualifications for the victories the surah goes on to describe.
How does the Quran describe the Battle of Badr?
Al-Anfal describes Badr as a victory engineered by Allah: rain that purified and firmed the believers’ footing, drowsiness sent as security, a thousand angels arriving in succession, and fear cast into the enemies’ hearts. Verse 17 summarizes it: the believers acted, but it was Allah who gave the acts their effect.
What does Surah Al-Anfal say about peace?
Verse 61 commands that if the enemy inclines toward peace, the believers should incline toward it as well and rely upon Allah. The surah thus makes peace the preferred outcome whenever it is genuinely offered, and it treats peacemaking as strength, not weakness.
Is Surah Al-Anfal connected to Surah At-Tawbah?
Yes. The two surahs form a thematic pair on struggle, treaties, and the testing of the community. Al-Anfal deals with the aftermath of Badr and the internal readiness of the believers, while At-Tawbah turns to the later challenges of treaties, hypocrisy, and the Tabuk expedition. Some scholars even discussed whether the two were originally one discourse.
Final Thoughts
Surah Al-Anfal refuses to let its reader separate the spiritual from the practical. Faith is measured in trembling hearts and established prayers; victory is measured in trust, not numbers; wealth is measured in how it is shared, not how it is seized. The people of Badr won because they had the qualities of verses 2 to 4 before they had the victory of verse 17. That is the surah’s lasting equation, and it holds for every struggle a believer will ever face. Continue with Surah At-Tawbah, the surah’s twin, where the tests grow harder and the call to sincerity grows louder.
