Juz 23
Surah Sad is a Makki surah of 88 verses with a single word that runs through all of it: awwab, one who turns back to Allah again and again. The surah applies that word to Dawud, to Sulaiman, and to Ayyub, three prophets who were tested in very different ways. It then sets the opposite figure against them. Iblis, told to prostrate to Adam, refused out of pride, and the surah gives his argument in full. This guide covers the opening dispute with the Makkan leaders, the three prophets, the story of Iblis, and the surah's closing instruction.
What Is Surah Sad?
Surah Sad is the 38th surah of the Quran. It is a Makki surah with 88 verses. It begins with the single Arabic letter Sad, and then swears by the Quran full of reminder.
The name is the letter that opens it. Scholars say that the meaning of such disconnected letters is known only to Allah, though several explanations have been offered.
The Makkan Leaders and Their Objection
The first verses record the leaders' surprise at the Prophet's message. They say: "Has he made the gods into one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing." The surah says that the leaders walked away urging one another to be patient and stay with their gods.
A report in Jami at-Tirmidhi describes how Quraysh's leaders came to Abu Talib when he was ill and asked him to settle the matter with his nephew. The Prophet asked them to say a single word, with which the Arabs would follow them and the non-Arabs would pay tribute to them. They refused to say "there is no god but Allah." Tirmidhi graded the report as acceptable, and many commentators cite it as the occasion of these verses.
Dawud: Strength and Turning Back
Dawud is introduced with a command to the Prophet: "Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant Dawud, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back to Allah." The mountains glorified with him at sunset and sunrise, and the birds were gathered, all turning back to Him. His kingdom was strengthened and he was given wisdom and decisive speech.
The surah then describes two litigants who climbed over the wall of his prayer chamber. One of them said that his brother had ninety-nine ewes and he had one, and that the other had said, "Entrust it to me," and overpowered him in speech. Dawud said that he had wronged him by asking for his ewe in addition to his own, and then realized that he had been tested. He asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down bowing, and turned back. Allah forgave him and said that he had a place near Him.
Scholars have explained the episode in several ways, and many caution against details found in some storytellers' versions that are not supported by authentic reports. The surah itself gives only the outline of the test and Dawud's response of seeking forgiveness and prostrating.

The Verse of Prostration in Surah Sad
Verse 24 mentions that Dawud fell down prostrating. Scholars differ over whether the verse calls for a prostration of recitation. Ibn Abbas is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari to have said that Sad is not one of the obligatory prostrations, but that he saw the Prophet prostrate in it. Some schools treat it as a prostration of recitation, and others treat it as a prostration of gratitude, performed when the reciter is not in prayer.
Sulaiman: Gifts and a Test
Dawud's son Sulaiman is called an excellent servant and one who turned back to Allah. The surah mentions the display of fine horses before him in the evening. Sulaiman said that he preferred the love of good things to the remembrance of his Lord until the sun disappeared, and ordered the horses brought back. The verses that follow, about what he did with the horses, are understood in different ways by the commentators.
The surah says that Sulaiman was tried, and that a body was placed on his throne, after which he turned back. He asked: "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me." Allah made the wind and the devils subject to him. The commentators differ on what the body was, and the Quran does not specify it, so the lesson is the response: he turned back, asked forgiveness, and recognized that the kingdom was a gift.
Ayyub: Patience and an Answered Prayer
Ayyub's account is short and gentle. He called to his Lord: "Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment." He was told: "Strike with your foot; this is a cool bath and a drink."
Allah restored his family and the like of them with them, as a mercy and a reminder for people of understanding. He was then told to take in his hand a bunch of grass and strike with it and not break his oath. Scholars explain that Ayyub had sworn to strike someone, and that Allah gave him a way to keep the oath without causing harm.
The surah closes the account with the words: "Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back."
Other Prophets
The surah mentions Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaqub, as people of strength and insight whom Allah chose for a pure quality, the remembrance of the Hereafter. It also mentions Ismail, Al-Yasa, and Dhul-Kifl, saying that all of them are among the best.

Iblis and the Argument of Pride
The last long account is the creation of Adam. Allah told the angels that He would create a human being from clay, and when He had proportioned him and breathed into him of His spirit, they were to fall down in prostration. All the angels prostrated, except Iblis, who was arrogant and was among the disbelievers.
When Allah asks why he did not prostrate, Iblis gives the argument for which he is known: "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay." Scholars have said that this was the first act of analogy used against a command, and that the answer reveals the disease behind it, which was pride and not ignorance.
Allah told him to leave, as he is expelled and cursed until the Day of Recompense. Iblis asked for respite until the Day they are resurrected and was given it, and he swore by Allah's might that he would mislead all of them, except Allah's sincere servants among them.
The Closing Instruction
The surah ends with the Prophet saying: "Say, 'I do not ask you for any payment for this, and I am not of the pretentious.' It is not except a reminder for the worlds. And you will surely know its information after a time."

Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech."
[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds – and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah].
38:25 Faghafarnaa lahoo zaalik; wa inna lahoo 'indanaa lazulfaa wa husna ma aab
So We forgave him that; and indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.
38:26 Yaa Daawoodu innaa ja'alnaaka khaleefatan fil ardi fahkum bainan naasi bilhaqqi wa laa tattabi'il hawaa fayudillaka 'an sabeelil laah; innal lazeena yadilloona 'an sabeelil laah; lahum 'azaabun shadeedum bimaa nasoo Yawmal Hisaab
[We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah." Indeed, those who go astray from the way of Allah will have a severe punishment for having forgotten the Day of Account.
38:27 Wa ma khalaqnas samaaa'a wal arda wa maa bainahumaa baatilaa; zaalika zannul lazeena kafaroo; fawi lul lillazeena kafaroo minan Naar
And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.
38:28 Am naj'alul lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati kalmufisdeena fil ardi am naj'alul muttaqeena kalfujjaar
Or should we treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like corrupters in the land? Or should We treat those who fear Allah like the wicked?
38:29 Kitaabun anzalnaahu ilaika mubaarakul liyaddabbarooo Aayaatihee wa liyatazakkara ulul albaab
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.

Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

FAQ
What does the letter Sad at the start of the surah mean?
It is one of the disconnected letters at the start of some surahs. Scholars say that its precise meaning is known only to Allah, though several explanations have been proposed.
What does "awwab" mean?
Awwab means one who repeatedly returns to Allah in repentance, obedience, and remembrance. The surah uses it for Dawud, Sulaiman, and Ayyub.
Is verse 24 a verse of prostration?
Scholars differ. Ibn Abbas is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari as saying that it is not one of the required prostrations, but that he saw the Prophet prostrate in it. Some treat it as a recitation prostration and others as a prostration of gratitude.
What was Dawud's test with the two litigants?
Two men entered his prayer room and brought a dispute about ninety-nine ewes and one. Dawud judged quickly, then realized he had been tested, sought forgiveness, and fell down in prostration. The surah gives only this outline, and commentators advise caution about added details.
Why did Ayyub strike with a bunch of grass?
Scholars explain that he had sworn an oath to strike someone. Allah told him to take a bunch of grass and strike once with it, so that he would keep his oath without causing harm.
Why did Iblis refuse to prostrate?
He said he was better than Adam because he was made of fire and Adam of clay. The Quran presents this as pride and a refusal to obey Allah's command.
What does it mean that Iblis exempted the sincere servants?
Iblis promised to mislead everyone except the sincere (mukhlasin) servants of Allah. The verse shows that his reach is limited, and that those who are sincere are protected.
Final Thoughts
Surah Sad sets side by side two reactions to being corrected. Dawud and Sulaiman realize a test has come, ask forgiveness, and turn back. Iblis hears a command he does not like and argues that he is better. Ayyub's patience sits between them as a picture of what it means to stay close to Allah when everything has been taken. When you realize you have made a mistake, which response do you notice in yourself first: the quick turn back of the prophets, or the quiet argument that you were right?
